We need to talk about whirlwind

As it stands right now. Whirlwind is an unsatisfying, weak, wet noodle ability. Not that warriors lack AOE due to other means. That isn’t the problem. But with such a core warrior ability like whirlwind, its state is depressing when it’s purpose is only to cleave with rampage.(and now in shadowlands to use cleave for arms) The damage it does on its own is non-existent, and you don’t feel that “punch” you did pressing it as you did during classic through wotlk.

As it stands currently the fury spec performs well in bfa sure. But in shadowlands whirlwind is going to be baseline for all specs. Considering this I wonder if it’s maybe time to bring it back to it’s former glory?

Instead of its current use, which is to buff other spells, put it back on the single target rotation, for all specs. A hard hitting cleave aoe attack that hits up to 5 targets. a singular damage number again, not the awkward 5 hit split it currently does which looks and feels bad. Since the other specs have their own means of AOE, have the cooldown of this whirlwind be reduced by 0.5-1 second per auto attack for the fury spec. This reduction mechanic will increase the specs cleave consistency and be very fun, keeping the specs fast paced “wild” cleaver feel.

Anyway maybe this is just me. How do you guys feel about whirlwind? As it stands right now I have no idea why this spell would ever be used in prot

I like the current WW. Makes aoe not be a mongoloid spam all buttons rotation. It adds rhythm. Whirlwind, Ability, Ability, rinse and repeat. For fury anyways… And for arms… well I don’t think they should have whirlwind at all. They need to make cleave their baseline “spread bleeds to everything” ability. And for prot… maybe the idea fits, but they’re spamming thunderclap all day as is xD

Whirlwind has a nice animation, but the damage isn’t great I agree. I don’t want to lose it on Arms just because of the animation. I completely agree that it feels awful to use for damage.

With Fury it fits nicely into the rotation but it’s damage is pathetic. With Arms it’s just a rage dump through FoB, which leads to spamming it and ruining the quality of the animation.

Making it hit harder on its own would lead to spamming it just for damage. Which leaves Arms in a similar state. Maybe for Arms make an interaction with bleeds. Say after applying a bleed the next two whirlwinds hit for 50% more? Or something like that.

For Fury they could just increase the damage of Whirlwind and lower the amount spread from Rampage. That keeps the current functionality while making Whirlwind feel better to use.

The entire game has changed since WW was a juicy ability to use. For example, in classic it did weapon damage. It was literally just an extra, instant, on demand “white swing” that cost 25 rage. The reason it felt good to press was because weapon damage actually meant something back then.

I feel like in order for them to do that these days it’d be alot more work than it’s worth.

fury is getting wrecking ball back

This isn’t just a warrior issue many of the talents coming back are very weak. Maybe they just have not done a numbers pass yet?

They absolutely haven’t done one yet. The numbers pass doesn’t happen until the end of the Beta, when the bugs are fixed and the talent and rotational changes are finished. We’re still on the initial Alpha build. We’re not getting a numbers pass for months still.

It’s not really a tuning matter. Whirlwind hits for snot because (for arms) it’s a spammable rage burner. Obviously for fury it exists only to cleave the attacks you actually care about, or to give yourself something to do when BT/RB are on cooldown. The button itself is just kinda meh.

Well yes, but I was specifically replying to Formidable, who brought up the general state of talents on the Alpha. Not just Warrior talents or WW and its related talents.

I wish we could have Dragon Roar and Wrecking ball.
