So I just unlocked the worgen heritage armor, and immediately went and made a new babby worgen so as to wear the fancy armor from a low level, which is something I always do cos I love alts. That’s how I was reminded that Vassandra Stormclaw wasn’t just some rando character they made up for the heritage questline, but an established NPC from the original worgen starting zone to whom they gave full voice lines and then went back and applied some of them as on-click lines to the old version.
Folks, we gotta talk about this voice acting.
What is that VA doing? I think she’s maybe going for the whole “ethereal night elf” routine but good lord I have never heard anyone with a human vocal tract manage to sound that belligerently creepy. Why did the vocal director let her do that?? Did they tell her to do that? I’m not kidding, I was absolutely convinced on the strength of that voicing alone that this character was “secretly” evil and about to betray me and I’d have to kill her, but nope. Seems like just a nice, helpful night elf druid being portrayed as the lovechild of Gollum and Palpatine by a lovely coloratura soprano.
Am I the only one? I can’t be the only one. Tell me y’all were creeped out by this too. I’m questioning my sanity here.

I didn’t remember the voice at all. It’s really bad.

Sounds like the same voice actor as Sylvanas.

You think so? I don’t really hear it, but I guess that would explain her turning in the weirdest performance possible. Definitely wouldn’t want those two characters to sound alike.
Is that Ventress’s voice actress? She’s been in a lot of stuff and I know she’s great. If that is her I gotta wonder why she did that.
But hey, since we’re talking about strange voice acting can I mention Brann in BfA and Jale Rivermane sound off to me?

Also speaking of strange voice acting compare solemn king magni of vanilla to chompian boy of modern times

I think my favorite weird vocal performance in WoW is the green dragon you ride on the intro quests to Hyjal. That dude chews the scenery, chokes on it, and hacks up a hairball.
"The FIRElord is rrrrRRRRRISEN!!! We must hurreh."
Glorious. I often choose Cata leveling over Pandaria (which I like more) on new alts just to listen to that magnificent cringe.

According to Wowpedia and IMDb, Nika Futterman has indeed worked on BfA. Can’t find confirmation on Vassandra, specifically, but it’s a solid bet. Good catch.
Why y’all gotta bully these poor voice actors/actresses?

did you click the youtube link?
It’s… that’s weird. It kind of sounds like they’d intended worgen or nelf but worgen in model but then… changed their mind, changed the npc to vassandra, and kept the voice lines? That’s the only theory I can muster for why they had her do uh… that…

Also you can’t entirely blame the VA for these things; they don’t work unsupervised. There’s a director overseeing their performances. So at minimum, someone in charge signed off on the weird performance; it’s also possible they specifically directed the VAs to do…well, the above. Sometimes actors end up turning in peculiar work against their own better judgment because they’re directed by someone with a “vision.”

Scott McNeil from the Dawn of War series is another fun entry in the wild world of “Wait you want me to do what?” when an excellent voice actor is put in the hands of a crap director. After doing some of the most iconic voice lines ever in Dawn of War, Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade he was then handed the atrocious script and direction of Soulstorm where he proceeded to produce a nearly infinite number of memes rather than take any of it seriously.

I will hear no criticism of Dawn of War’s voice acting. Every line is a treasure.

Do all Gilnean not have a cockney accent?
Some, my dear Autai, reason to focus on correct enunciation and speak in just the right inflection to set themselves apart from the crowd. An “upper class” accent, if you will.

…Okay, admittedly, not the finest performance one can give.
