We need to talk about Thunderstrike Ward

As far as I know, elemental shamans are the only class in the game that have a “required” talent for their best builds that needs a certain type of item in their weapon slot to even use that talent.

Why is this talent not just “Imbue your weapon” instead of “Imbue your shield”?

If it was a utility talent that had damage reduction maybe it would make sense thematically but it’s a damage talent that shoots down lightning. It doesn’t make staves, then remove them from out loot table. Why should I get a staff in my vault if its useless to me?

Little things like this are so unnecessary and frustrating to try and gear around especiallywith RNG and how powerful weapons are in early gearing.

Honestly I don’t think shamans should
Be able to use staves. It’s a loss of armor.

I generally don’t use it for long if I get one …

But as far as classes that are forced into a weapon set we are not alone … fury warriors. Arms warriors. Enhancement shamans. Subtlety rogues. Survival hunters.

Sure entire specs are based around certain weapons, but I’m talking about a single talent in a spec.

It’d be like Fury warriors having a strong talent that ONLY can be applied to two-handed maces. It just wouldn’t make any sense.

I feel like the point is that no Elemental Shaman worth their salt is going to be not using a shield. No one is going to be keen on losing the armor a shield provides. Having Thunderstrike Ward be a regular weapon imbue also means that Elemental would then be locked out of Improved Flametongue Weapon and the bonus to fire damage it deals.

Just ditched my shammy alt over this. Never had a shammy until this expansion. Was having fun with the class too until I was swamped with two handers and decided no class should have to deal with this kind of friction when gearing.

Honestly they just need to remove two handers from resto/ele entirely.

The vast majority of AoE damage in raids and M+ is largely magic damage which armor does NOTHING to help mitigate. And deciding factor of whether you survive a physical aoe or something like the charge on the 2nd boss on Ara-Kara isn’t going to be the armor on the shield, it’s “did you use SBT or AS”. And I’m gonna tell you right now, if there was a staff

They can literally just bake it into Lighting Shield so they don’t compete.

Not to digress but any person who keeps waffling on about 2 hand Enhance coming back I need you to read what he just said.

Shaman shouldn’t be able to equip staves. The armor and block from a shield are too important for solo PvE and PvP, and staves have ZERO compensation for this.

But assuming they won’t change that, thunderstrike ward should just be a passive. It would make no difference for gameplay
