We need Hard Mode for leveling

That would cool if it was an option you could toggle. That way some could use it and others could power level like normal.

Leveling was always boring.

First off, efficiency isn’t the point.
In fact, trying to maintain it is the problem.

It’s about enjoying the experience, which should require completing all the required questlines and likely hitting the level cap shortly before finishing the core storyline. I’d even argue a few dungeons (perhaps using the follower dungeon system as a option) should be included along the way, and probably a few “story mode” raid encounters as well.

It’s a tall order, but necessary at this point.

This is only because the endgame-centric design of WoW has successfully driven off the large majority of players who want a quality leveling experience.

Bringing these players back requires such an overhaul.

Nevertheless, the “Why bother?” question has some validity. The effort required to properly fix leveling is monumentous and success is not guaranteed. It doesn’t help that the endgame itself drives away these same players.

So leveling continues to be irrelevant, because there is hardly anyone left to enjoy it… and there’s hardly anyone left because it’s been made into an irrelevant experience.

Fixing this vicious cycle is difficult, but could up-end WoW in the process.

The test for it is coming in Lemix. And there’s a couple of threads about it, including from Community Council.

It would be more like a selection in Chromie Time I’d imagine.

This is impossible in a 20 year old MMO. Unless you just want to take a year to level one character.

Not even at all.

Nah, what we need is the removal of the scaling experiment imo

I’m looking forward to their experiment on open world difficulty adjustment. Like Diablo 3 you can choose a Torment difficulty where it would grant more experience and monsters would deal more damage and have more health.

Presumably, the increase in challenge would coincide with an increase in leveling time lol

That’s not what leveling should do lol

IMO, more optional difficult stuff would be great. I miss having to individually CC, and plan pulls. Back when I was a noob vanilla WoW player, I used to go into pulls like a battle planner, now I just faceroll everything. IMO facerolling is still BIS, but an optional to really ramp up the challenge would be refreshing.

That’s what leveling has done for more years than not.

I never said it wasn’t. The point was that it shouldn’t. Leveling as a means to an end is not a leveling experience. It’s an inconvenient hurdle, which illustrates the problem leveling has.

Well that’s wrong.

Just leveling to level with no goal is not an meaningful experience either.

I also never said leveling shouldn’t have a goal. You are working overtime to misinterpret the point lol

Which is what exactly?

If leveling’s purpose is to just get from point A to point B, then realistically, it has no purpose. It’s a meaningless prolonging of the game. Blizzard could remove leveling tomorrow and the difference would be imperceivable.

That does not mean “leveling shouldn’t have a goal.” It means “leveling should not exist in the shadow of the endgame” lol

Let’s stick to play-time as a metric, as the that could be spread over different time-frames depending on the player.

I wouldn’t mind if leveling in WoW took ~80-100 hours, provided it was a comprehensive experience and enjoyable throughout. It doesn’t have to include everything, but it could cover substantially more than what is covered by it now.

And for reference, that’s around half the playtime for the MSQ in FFXIV right now. Maybe less.

For completeness’ sake, I would have no objections for faster leveling as an option for those that want it. But right now, that’s the only option without using all sorts of work-arounds to try and come up with something functional as an alternative.

Umm… No? In what way is “kill 10 boars” for 6 months even remotely fun

I remember when they made it kind of longer to kill things during questing after the TWW release and people complained.

Many of us lived through the “hard leveling” because we’ve been here from the beginning.

If you want a check box to turn on hard mode… they could definitely do that. They already have “war mode” to place you in PvP.

It should be optional. Because my alt army is for very different things and I want them at a high level quickly.

So how do you accomplish this and still have an endgame?
