We Have Basements

Heard it from Mahet, checked and it worked. Have fun designing.

The only way to get between floors is a stairway room, right?

Given that, I feel like we’re in a bit of an annoying situation:

  • If you use a Stairway Left or Stairway Right room, it has exactly two connectable entrance points: the one at the top, and the one at the bottom on the same side.

So you can’t have a stairway room where say , if you enter the stairway room on the top floor and go to the right without going downstairs, you get to another room. So you couldn’t have more than one room open onto the stairway.

  • Or, you use an empty stairway room, and build everything custom inside, including the stairs and the floors.

Now I know we got the dyeable premade stair units in 12.1, which is great, but I’m having trouble getting those to stack to the right height. Right now it looks like six of them will basically span across the room, say from Top North to Bottom South, but a bit awkwardly. If I have each unit snap to the next one, the top one is a little lower than the top floor level and there is a climbable, but unsightly, step.

So that will mean figuring out what size to scale the stair units to that would look better.

The further problem then is what to do about floors. It seems like if I use platforms (Bel’Ameth, Stormwind, Silvermoon, etc.), I can’t get them to snap to each other on the edges, so laying out a consistently-even balcony is very difficult; just gotta eyeball it as closely as possible and deal with a bit of ugly clipping.

So it’s great that we now have basements, but I’m a bit frustrated with the logistics of how to make getting to them aesthetically pleasing. Anyone have any thoughts?

The rise/run of the prefab stairs is pretty terrible. I have a LOT of stairs and the only thing I used them for was for the roofs of some houses I built in a circle room. You will just have to learn to make stairs, or be satisfied with what is in the game. Fortunately there are a number of things with a decor cost of 1 that you can use. Some of them dyable.

When it comes to floors, I suggest the new tiles not the old platforms. They look substantially better and are ALSO dyable.

I’ve never had this problem. It can be a little annoying, since mouse movement isn’t exactly precise when doing stuff like this, but it just takes a little patience. Maybe try angling your camera so you’re more head-on to the edge of the platforms.

Don’t be afraid to use unconventional items as walls, floors, or ceilings. I’ve got dozens of tables making up the floors of my build. Covered tables also make excellent carpeted stairs, though that does absolutely chew through your budget. The tall sturdy bookcase (the dyeable one from the neighborhood vendor) makes great walls.

The platform beams can also be used to clean up edges and joints that don’t look very good, by sinking them down to cover up the seams.

I used the new spiral staircase to go from the bottom floor to the second. It took 3 spirals stacked atop each other to reach the 2nd floor. I put a closet on floor two right above the entry way so I would know where the cut-off was.

I stacked them up, carefully got them all properly aligned, and used the new floor tiles to build a custom floor. It looks beautiful!

  1. Save every room individually and full interior as a precaution.
  2. Optional: Delete rooms or use reset.
  3. Use a single stairwell empty and extend to desired floor.
  4. Attach a small room to the desired floor then move entryway to the small room.
  5. Delete the stairwell empty. Enjoy your new starter floor.
  6. Add rooms back in individually.

Note: there is a bug with moving rooms between floors where they drag and drop decor into the void. It can affect other rooms that you drag through or lose from the room being dragged. It’s easier to save blueprint, delete, and restore. Do not apply full interior as it will place it back at the original starting floor, you use it in case anything screws up.

Why a single stairwell empty, whether you use multiple or extend the amount of room budget used is the same either way. So it’s really up to you, but a single will keeps from moving around too much and easier to see.

Based on this and Cur’s recommendation, I will definitely try the new tiles. Thanks!

Already done.

Vampire lair unlocked.

I agree on using the new floor tiles, sharp edges and color as desired… yes please.

Until now I have avoided making my own stairs and used floor tiles as ramps. It helps that my base is a Night Elf house, and they often use ramps. It also helps not having to adjust things for races of at least 3 different sizes. Steps that look the right size for the taller races like Worgen and Dracthyr kinda work out for Elves, but just look insanely tall for my little Vulpera alt.

Place a square platform at an angle (between 30-40 degrees worked fine for me), place a round or angled platform when you want to go around a bend, and continue up until you have the desired level. Makes a nice spiral staircase, but it will be a lot wider than using the new staircase. On the plus side… you have enough room to place something in the middle.

YOU have a basement.

I have a crypt.
