We got demoted from Hero to Sidekicks and Dalaran becomes a grenade

Has anyone ever noticed how up to WoD and Legion, we went from being the heroes to potential leaders? We became a valued character in the story of wow where the player actions were met with praise, admiration, and a sense that you are doing more than just simple labors or being back seat.

Warlords of Draenor introduced us to the potential to lead the charge ourselves. To become more involved in the story and the events that revolve against the common foe. Where you had a team of your own and allies (Followers) you could choose with specific talents that aided you on your quests/journey.

Then in Legion you become an active leader in an organization that heralds the charge against a foe promoting the end of the world. And having one of the lead characters follow you as well made it worthwhile. Highlord, Archmage, Slayer, and so many other titles that we were recognized for.

Battle for Azeroth we fought as Azeroths champion of course but those titles were removed and we became just champion or hero or emissary.

Silver Hand, done. Tirisgarde, done. Conclave, get back to sweeping the cathedral now as we won’t see any of these groups with recognition with them. I don’t recall the Silver Hand recognizing a paladin with the Highlord title or mages recognizing the Archmage when in the Azure Span in DF.

Then came SL and in that regard its understandable to be the Maw Walker, again a singular role where we took a leap into the unknown that no-one else dared to go.

But the outcome since we returned to azeroth is the same. We became downgraded players in a story where we are seen as nothing less than the side kick, the champion that supports the hero barely involving themselves in anything more than a few events here or there.

We became the support role and once again were used while others rose to power. In DF it was about restoring the power of the aspects to gods while we get a nice Dragonflight champion title and a pat on the back.

Wow all that work for so little.

The recent events regarding the destruction of Dalaran make it seem so petty that they could have done better. Everyone that loved building their RP around Dalaran organizations. But blizzard got lazy and wiped the city out like it was nothing.

Spoiler.

Notice how a city of mages all fled and Khadgar fought alone, a failed Guardian. Where was the might of the Kirin Tor to fight such a foe or even the Aspects who all have their power back.

(It would have been one thing if the city fell and became a damage island in the ocean being repaired but wiped out like a pathetic handful of sand? No no no. I lost respect for that.

BTW WHERE IS THE EYE OF AMAN’THUL, it was never used in the Tomb of Sargeras. Broken lore as usual as we all know of the Eyes potential to save/protect the city.)

And the players just accept it. Its end is a literal copycat alteration version of Kil’jadens ship destruction.

Personally i refuse to follow the story or the “Lore” and hope other players rise to be more than just the mob character of the story. Make the game their own and to heck with Alleria or Khadgar or any of these other story characters.

Honestly, I kind of prefer it this way. Our characters get plenty of attention. They are famous and known by all the major lore figures on a first name basis. And we have appeared in key moments in many cutscenes Of the expansion so far. For a while, I kind of got tired of us being the chosen one of every expansion. It’s still not quite the same as vanilla WoW where we were random murder hobos killing boars for coppers. We’ve still got presence and significance.

Personally, I prefer to just be an adventurer. I don’t want to be a hero, a champion, etc. I just want to be the monk or hunter that explores these places we find ourselves in, and I’m happy to help the others with their plights, but at the end of the day, I don’t want to be some big wig in the game.

That’s one of the reasons MOP was my favorite expansion, because I was just another person exploring this new land that no one had ever been to, and it was such an adventure!

The above two posts pretty much summarize my thoughts. I don’t want to be the great big hero, the Champion of Azeroth. I want to be random Horde/Alliance soldier #11764. I like being just another NPC that’s playing a supporting role in the story.

I don’t think these NPC characters are well written. Every expansion seems to rewrite each character’s persona, so I totally gave up on that.

I write my own stories for my warband, and it works for me. Playing through the wow story is more like a side quest for me the player, and has nothing to do with my warband story.

The Pook has never been a BDH (Big Damn Hero). I’m just a working gnome trying to make my way on a planet that once got stabbed by a cosmic space giant with a really big sword.

I really just wanna be a murder hobo again.

I’m not a murder hobo per say but if someone needs a stabbing the Pook has stabbers.

I vastly prefer the actual characters being the hero.
I’ve never felt much connection to my character in the game’s story because… they’re barely a character. “Champion” is super nebulous. They can be (and are) any race, any gender, any class, any background, any motivation. You can’t really have the game react in a meaningful way when there’s THAT many variables.

Anduin and Alleria and Jaina and Thrall (etc.) are characters with set motivations, backstories, etc. THEY’RE the protagonists, and our character is the support.
EVEN if you say “they’re poorly written and their motivations change every expansion” it’s still more characterization than “Thank you for saving our world again, random Champion #159872394871!”

I’m okay with my character being a nobody in the storyline.

I have my roleplay for my character actual development.

Post deleted. I’m tired of be a negative nancy. Imma just go play in Dwarven Wales and hunt sheep, as the gods intended.

I prefer being a humble little Priestess and Healer in the Cathedral over being a big damn hero.

I like things simple lol. :3

I like not being the main hero.
I also am ok with expansions where the whole universe isnt at stake. I would be cool with lower key expansions. Just keep building the world (in one way or another) and progressing plot and I’m happy. I don’t need power creep, I just need polish on releases

I’ll agree with most of the above posters. I keep my armor simple, I like being a rank and file Alliance veteran. I’ve seen a lot been at major conflicts its nice not to be called “Champion” . Being a cog in a bigger machine is fine by me.

Since WoW’s creation we, the players and our characters, were never meant to be THE Hero but apart of the collective of heroes.

Since Vanilla all the raids and major achievements up until WoD was Azeroth’s Adventures or Champions. It put the MMO in MMORPG, it was only when we worked together did we achieve the strength required to saved Azeroth.

The Black Dragons, Illidan, Arthas, Deathwing, and the Sha. It took everyone, and after MoP is when the game started to lose many players because of this IMO. They broke away with the original way to game is, to frame our characters as THE hero.

Personally (maybe I’m still wearing the rose tinted goggles of the past) i believe that’s how the game should be. It was never about this one individual character, but ALL of the characters working together like an MMORPG should be played.

It’s better this way, there is no way we should be as important as Jaina or Thrall. If it was the case, who is the most important ? Your paladin or my paladin ? who’s the leader of the Order Hall in character ?

Can’t get anything proper done with all these eyes on you.

For real though. I appreciate not being appreciated.

I do wish they would drop the champion this, and champion that though.

Give us a nice, gender neutral: Friend.

Not too big. Not too little.

“Here we go, Friend. A whole new big adventure awaits.”

I do not want my story told for me. Do you?

i like not being the chosen one. it makes more sense to me that the story focuses more on the major lore characters than me. i am just one of many people that get called when spit hits the fan, alongside the other players. i want to retire in a nice cottage near some mountains and a nice forest, but stuff always happens so i have to make sure in retirement that i have a home to go back to.

Some people just seem to enjoy toiling in mediocrity. I don’t get it, but to each their own.
