My ideal expansion at this point would be if they did a complete overhaul of the old world like they did for Arathi Highlands and Darkshore, and focus on evolving the narrative of the world itself since cataclysm.
Create new Capitols for Gnomes, Trolls, Night Elves and Forsaken, get very in depth about the problems facing the citizens from zone to zone, update some familiar faces, give us some back story on what’s been going on since we left, maybe throw player housing options on there for different zones, add more RPG elements back to the game, and focus on the slow build of interconnected narratives that result in the baddies that we fight in raids.
Kind of a big ask, I know, at least on the surface…
Such a release would likely take longer than a normal expansion, but imo, if they went back to basics and didn’t squander time with dumb quests referencing Indiana Jones and Rambo every… SINGLE… quest, or trying to achieve a half-baked “broken world” aesthetic, this is actually doable. It took the original Vanilla team what, 4 years to complete the ENTIRE old world, raids, and testing?
Its actually not that crazy of a goal, I think, and from the response that Classic wow got in 2019, and continues to get today… to me this means that despite blizzards hesitation to change the old world, if done responsibly, accurately, and with a sensible timeline, such an update could be one of the most popular expansions ever. A sort of “homecoming” expansion, if you would.
Take us home, Blizz… Please
