Just curious, but how much of a lift would it be to create a Dungeon Builder for WoW, as WC had a map builder.
The old map builder gave us MOBAs. Could a dungeon builder give us the next BRD?

Wouldn’t work. The map builder in WC3 was a local application. There are a lot of difficulties in letting the player base create dungeons to then upload to WoW’s servers to host and serve other player.
Yeah but don’t assume that it would plug in the same. Assume it’s a separate game that you can play for the same fee a la Classic.
I loved building maps and dungeons for Red alert, Lothgar online,
So much fun,but I don’t see Activision giving creative permission to players
Would it be a client you download, and is completely local to you? I still don’t think Blizz would let their assets out of their control.
The difference is in wc3, or any rts for that matter, map builders work because you aren’t playing against the map, you’re playing against other factions, ai or player controlled. In dungeons you are playing against the dungeon.
Yeah? I mean most things these days own the content you create.
As for it being local, I don’t have a position. But dungeon builder could eventually become a competition players compete in, and that could lead to a better experience for all.
In my dungeon there is only a single hall, but it is filled with those lightning maze things from ToS and Suppression traps from BWL.
I think allowing the player base to create content is a great idea but it would take a genius or more to implement it.
DOTA was a map edit which essentially became League of Legends, Counterstrike was a Half Life reskin and map job done by a single person.
Clearly allowing others to mess around in your sandpit can create some masterpieces.
So who would host the dungeons the players create? Is blizzard going to create a whole new set of infrastructure to do this game? Who’s going to check the dungeon’s to make sure they’re playable, and don’t have stuff hidden in them. You know some jackwagon will put hidden racist stuff in a map, or weiners hidden throughout.
I’m not saying it wouldn’t be cool, I just think it would be too much of a pain to implement.
And I think it’s too easy to be negative. Anyone can find problems.
The ROI on a system like this would set Blizzard up for major success. This isn’t something you just run once and go “yeah alright!” It’s a design competition, and then there’s months of bug checks and implementation. But that’s still far less work than doing it all from scratch. Which is why dungeons as of late have been hallways.
What is the ROI?
Sub extensions, event sponsorship on the design competition, it’s a whole additional portion of the universe that not only creates player engagement but also makes the playable game easier to run. You’d also be able to do regional competitions for things like this, building up a community and expanding the brand.
Neverwinter had this.
You create your own dungeons and what not, Star Trek Online also had this technology, to create your own missions.
But that requires a healthy Developer - Player relationship, where the devs aren’t insecure we wont like their content. Good luck getting that with the WoW team.
They had dungeon makers in eq2 started off good some ppl made good dungeons but in the end it will just turn into a farm area and ppl will stop doing normal dungeons all together since player made ones will be all about exp farming
But it was very fun when done right i could even add text to the boss fights
Yeah i think neverwinter online did it too.
Was a disaster iirc.
Ppl just made maps that were a truckload of mobs to grind xp or whatnot.
Also how would loot work? Obviously you can’t have players creating dungeons that drop legendaries or items they create. That would be complely broken.
Cool idea, but it would have to basically give no rewards.
Still…they could implement it with no rewards, and then the players vote on the dungeon of the month or something like that. At the end of the month you get a quest to complete the community voted on dungeon for an xtra bonus roll token or something.
Not possible, as you would have to get the maps out to the players to use them. Which would mean a screening process and a repo someplace of all the downloadable maps. Plus then Blizzard would have to review the maps to ensure the risk vs reward was at least some what balanced and you weren’t handing out artifacts for killing some level 1 kobolds in your instance.
The dungeons created would have to offer zero loot or XP.
That alone would make most people avoid them.
Not many people are going to run dungeons that give no tangible reward…just for the experience.
I guess maybe I should have been more explicit, but the dungeon maker wouldn’t be immediately implemented for all of the obvious things posted here.
If Elitist Jerks got people hired, why not create new sandboxes for other folks to be farmed up similarly.
