My water elemental has stopped working, I did the shrink glyph and thought that might be it but still doesn’t cast when I took it off. Blizz please fix this or get rid of the pet and buff us.

If waterbolt isn’t on auto cast, it won’t cast it on its own.
Make sure it’s summoned and then open your spell book. There should be a Pet tab and Waterbolt should be one of the abilities. If it doesn’t have a moving marquee border, it’s not on auto cast. Right click the ability to put it into auto cast.
If the pet is in passive mode, it won’t attack unless you give it a specific command and as soon as you stop commanding, it stops attacking. Pet Defensive mode should allow it to continue attacking once you give it an order to attack but once threat stops, it stops and won’t restart on its own. Pet Assist mode is the most aggressive mode and the default but sometimes it can get away from you too.
I use Defensive when in dungeons and Assist everywhere else and my 3 major attack macros (Frostbolt/Flurry, Ice lance/Frozen Orb, GS/Ebon) all have commands to force my Water Elly to attack. I also have an emergency STOP! macro with this:
/stopcasting
/stopattack
/petpassive [pet]
/petfollow [pet]
Which if my pet gets away from me, I can use it to stop and come back. It does change it to passive mode and you would need to manually reset that.
Add defensive, passive and assist as well as Follow and Move To to the pets skill bar.
Freeze I have baked into my own skill bar since I want full control over it.
