Wasted my time leveling Mage

Took time off work. Got 70 in a few days. Full Mythic Zero gear. Lowest DPS every dungeon. (As a mage for crying out loud) Full PVP set 411 and getting destroyed by almost every class. Feels like crap.

Yeah, mage felt bad to play at 70 and I remembered making the mistake of committing to it regardless in SL so I power leveled my lock to 70 and I’m so happy with demo. Will be the first expansion since WotLK I’ll pass on mage lol

What spec? I’m top dps in every mythic dungeon as arcane

Arcane has some good tricks now, and crazy burst when we get the timing right. I have not tracked my damage yet (will wait for M+), but definitely not feeling like a second tier DPS lately.

Havent done any PVE so i cant speak on that but from a PVP perspective:

My main is a mage, first to 70. After getting absolutely curb stomped I too was like what the hell, this is garbage. So I rolled up my alt (Arms Warr), 70, full honor, and had an absolute blast playing. Still I wanted to play a Wizard and decided to give it another go. Glad I did because im honestly having a lot of fun.

Fire is trash and no one can argue that, the fire buffs are pretty meaningless because Pyro needs to be impactful and 5% wont tip the scales. Fire blast and phoenix needed buffs as well. Arcane is currently sitting really well with super high burst damage but it doesnt fulfill that fantasy of class control.

While Frost still has problems and is outclassed by SP and Lock, its not end of the world bad. Frost Bolt still does trash damage outside of stacked modifiers, its still my biggest gripe on frost. Orb and instant empowered Blizzards disrupt the melee train while feeding you constant Finger procs. Two novas + 5sec freeze on Cone + slows, give you tons of control as well. That being said I have been having a lot of fun with two builds: Build A - focuses on flurry, fingers procs, and Glacial spike and Build B focuses on Flurry, Fingers Procs, and Icy Veins. Build B likely has more comp diversity but build A will have some comps that work and is generally fun to watch Glacial Spike crits.

Spike > Flurry while spike is mid air > Ice Lance > flurry > ice lance spam, add any additional procs of fingers from orbs or flurry procs that you weave lances or flurries into, and you can easily chunk a player for 70%+ of their health if not outright kill them depending on gear. 35-45k lances (multiple procs equals nutty pressure) + 30K plus flurries + 130-150k spike + 30k+ frostbolts = very strong consistent pressure.

Unless you get prolonged fights where I can turret, I will run mid to upper mid pack of damage. That being said I had a ton of insta cast damage which will only be stronger with the ice lance buff. Thats honestly huge and isnt being given enough credit. Glacial spike feels great atm. I can routinely land 130-150k crits with it. The nerf is to crit damage only, so im losing maybe 10-15k a hit on only crits, its not that bad. Especially when you factor ice lane buff.

So yes you are always going to be behind Locks and SP in total damage since we dont have any pad damage, but you have very good on demand damage with proc management. Plus tons of utility with ring of fire, ring of frost, blast wave, ice wall (will have its uses in RBGs), and DB. Last night i got my 20-0 achievement on my frost mage. Proc management can lead to some disgusting burst combos, we just need a little set up thats all.

We will definitely have our place in certain comps for Arena and while not meta for RBGs, we will be viable. Once people realize that SP and Demo/Aff are just as bad as DH and they receive some tuning we will be even better off. Im not a glad player but I have hit 2200, so my perspective comes from that. If I had to make a tier list Frost is a solid B tier or possible A tier depending on if some of the stronger classes get nerfed.

I have been doing alright as frost mage. The problem I have is melee just seems absurd right now which feels kinda bad especially at AOE. Seeing monks, death knights, demon hunters, paladins, etc walk up and instantly burst packs of mobs for like 110k+ dps while I am still casting blizzard is a little depressing. Evokers and Warlocks seem to be better than mage as well. I will wait to see what the raid logs look like because I may just be not performing as well as I did at the start of Shadowlands. I am expecting Frost to be near the bottom of the charts though.

I have been topping the meters too but that is an illusion. Historically Arcane has always done great in short fights because of our insane burst potential which has only been doubled down on with the talent tree revamps. But all of that is going to go away once we start doing M+ and tackling raid boss encounters that have dozens of mechanics which force movement and last 5-10 minutes.

Glad youre happy but i need a tpdr

tbh id rather just see buffs. this slow pace pvp style is boring asf. I want SL back, i dont care about the borrowed systems. Anything is better than a pve PvP bore fest

Arcane is one of the most mobile casters though? We have three (3!) charges of a 20 yard instant displacement spell (that doesnt interrupt casting and can be cast while casting), free movement during evocate and CCd arcane missiles (which we get a lot of), PoM, instant cast spells, 40% movement speed increasing invis’s, our RoP range is the size of Northrend (we don’t even take a big loss from grabbing flow instead) , what more could you ask for lol!

And our burst period fully comes up every minute, with a mini-burst inbetween all those! If you raided in pre-patch the rotation was exactly the same, and it felt great.

Sounds like you should pick another class.

Please, show us that gear.

Im literally watching a mage burst for 300k dps on 5 dummies and sustain 110k dps on them rebursting. He is 374 ilvl, as far as I know no other class can do that or sustain that.

play better. the class is fine. fire a tad low, but all specs of mage are better than any spec druid, dps warr, dps pal, better than 2 of 3 warlock specs, ect ect. less QQ more pew pew.

I have been top dps as arcane in mythic 0s only once was out dpsed by a shadow priest. what i dont like about the gameplay is its cooldown dependent. Holding your cds hoping you can use it on boss phase
You will most likely top dps on boss phases but trash mobs is another story

why does Blizz do this? they know how well every class performs. Makes no sense to me how they cant ever get this right.
Btw, if i hear another person say fire mage isnt good because it relies on gear blah blah blah…doesnt every class??

spec? my post has to be ten characters long…why are they so many restrictions…
im sure someone got their feelings hurt…everyone is in their feels now a days…god help

Man,

I’m not sure what you’re doing differently than me in PvP, but since the buffs to Ice Lance Frost feels really good in PvP. I do a lot of damage with the Freezing Winds Ice Lance build and also with the Glacial Spike build. You might be struggling with living, but there’s not a lot you can do to live in BGs without a pocket healer. When I 1v1 most classes in a BG I don’t really have any problems.
