It seems that as of late WOW look really bad (washed out, low contrast, too bright) when HDR is enabled in Windows. I do not have this issue with any apps and I use a TV with my PC where enabling HDR makes things looks much better (Sony xbr-55x900f). It is quite annoying every time I launch WOW to have to manually disable HDR, can anything be done about this?
WoW doesn’t have HDR support. What other apps do you use that works fine with HDR on?
Just about anything, Chrome, VLC, Need or Speed, COD: MW, Anno 1800, Twitch, Discord… It is the only thing I need to disable HDR for and it used to work fine a number of months ago.
MW and NFS are both HDR compatible, as is VLC and Chrome. Apps can force an sRGB profile clamp while in HDR mode, I’m assuming somehow WoW doesn’t, or not anymore since it’s happening now and not before. I toggle between HDR and non HDR anyway as the default max brightness of HDR mode on my monitor is way too blinding for day to day use (600 nits).
I don’t have an active sub since I got this monitor so I can’t really test HDR with WoW out right now.
I think you are correct, it used to do some sort of mode switch when WoW launched, but who knows if this change was in WoW or Windows or Nvidia. In any case, it would be nice if WoW supported HDR.
Do you still have this problem? I just resubbed to WoW recently and testing with HDR in Windows on, I don’t get the washed out colours you are experiencing.
