I hear that WOW is so old it was programmed in COBOL and they’re having a hard time finding programmers who can continue to work on the game. I read an article on Forbes saying that most of the people who are proficient with it are retiring and any systems that rely on it will have to be rewritten entirely.
Do you think it’s time for a new MMO like maybe one based on Starcraft?

Not sure if this is serious or trolling. No commercial game was ever written in COBOL. In 2004 games were typically written in C or C++. (Almost exclusively C++ today.)

No, no. There’s more than one world in Starcraft, after all.
They’ll call it Starcraft Universe.

There is not one living soul on this planet who knows how to use COBOL. In fact, I highly doubt there ever was.

I agree.
And I would also add that in some places in the coding they would use assembly for speed.
Then why is one of the first enemies you encounter called a COBOLD?
Pretty sure the programmers were having fun with their programming language at the time.

You mean the planet the 13 tribes of man originated from, with 12 forming the main civilization and the 13th world Earth being lost? Then came the cylons…

I’d totally play a Cylon if WoW offered that race.

The only thing I know about it is it takes about 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 pages of code to print a letter.

They still use C++ huh?
I’m a bit surprised programming hasn’t moved on more (considering the pace of everything else in technology), though I’m sure there’s been a lot of evolution over the years.
print(‘nah bruh all you need is this function, you don\'t have to worry about the backend implementation of how exactly this works!’)
I’m pretty sure WoW’s sourcecode is in C++ like most games that care about performance.

If you’ve majored in C.S. and been forced to learn languages like Lisp/Scheme/ML, etc. , then you can learn to program in any language.

Ah ok, well, it takes a lot of code to do things compared to C. Obviously I was exaggerating, also I know very little to nothing about COBOL.
I stand corrected
I really enjoyed learning COBOL when I was in school, I much prefer OO languages like C++ but COBOL was fun

COBOL is an amazing language to program in. Between going over old COBOL code in at work and doing some tinkering with it in OpenCOBOL I’ve enjoyed it. As far as this game goes, no it’s not written in COBOL but it should be…hic!
