I’m working on my own unique leveling experience and am trying to figure out the following:
was there flying at the release of TBC/Wrath/Cata/MoP/WoD/Legion in the zones or did they come later on for each expac? (in the new zones for each expac)
I’m asking because I’m making my own leveling map for a character and want to unlock my mounts as it was back then.
Thank you.
you had to get to level 70 in bc and pay for it, cant speak for wrath but you could flyin in cata and mop zones from the get go. From what I hear wod was when pathfinder reared its ugly head.

BC to MoP flying was there at the start and you could just buy it at max level from the trainer. Wrath was bought at 77 or 78 I think and Cata at 80. It was never enabled in any new zones though like the Molten Front, Isle of Thunder, Timeless Isle. Even today they’re still ground only.
WoD onwards is when Pathfinder started and flying didn’t open till later in the X.2 patches. Still wasn’t available in new zones afterwards though, which I think is just Argus.

From WoD onwards they had the pathfinder thing.
TBC/MoP Required you be max level. WotLK you could unlock it at level 77, and Cata it could be unlocked at level 80.

WoD actually said “no more flying ever” on a 3rd party website, on a holiday weekend. Slick, eh?

You had to get to 90 in MoP before you could fly.
I feel like something happened and we could fly there at 85, but like it was at the tail end of the expac. Am I getting senile?
You are senile.
I know what it was though. MoP had an item called Grimoire of the Four Winds. Normally you bought flying at 90, but the book could be traded to alts to get it at 85 as like a bonus for leveling. I think it was a Black Market item.

THAT WAS IT. I knew it was kinda gimmicky but not a huge deal. The book came out. Thank you!
I knocked my phone onto my keyboard after I typed this and scared the heck out of myself. I hope the imagery made you lol.

Yes. In BC, and Wrath - all you had to do was hit max level. In Cata, you had it off rip. In MoP, you just had to hit max level again.

BC: Bought at 70 for gold.
Wrath: Bought at level 77, final zones built around it.
Cata: Flying right at the start, zones designed around it.
MoP: Bought at 90, or an Account Bound tome from the BMAH for level 85.

Actually, in TBC, druids had flight form before max lvl at level 68. Everyone else had to buy normal flying and then epic flying at max level. Epic flying was required for the Dragonmaw rep to obtain the Netherdrake mounts.

So, to sum up:
Cata was the only one that had flying at launch.
TBC, Wrath and MoP required you to attain a certain level and then pay for it.
WoD and Legion have pathfinder.
thank you Silver for the summary, helped a bunch!
Well, WoD and beyond. WoD, Legion and BfA all had Pathfinder. It is of course shaping up like SL will also have Pathfinder.
Err, all preWOD had flying at launch. Cata was the only one that had flying as part of the entire level up process
I understand your meaning but for the sake of clarity, had to clean that up, sorry
I can vividly recall the druid hate during BC. I and others were whinging about druids not having to save up 5K gold
BC, wrath and MoP all had flying available right at max level. Cata had flying from launch.
For those few that could afford it. A lot of people like myself got the first level and though, well this sucks and stuck to ground. I think I finally got 280 speed at the end Wrath.
