There are two classes i plan on leveling. One of them is a warrior. The other is a hunter. But I would like to know for those that played in classic, is hunter worth investing time into?
In the long term going Warrior is your best bet in PvE and PvP. You’ll have to a shield because all Warriors are expected to tank if needed.
That said, there will always be spot for a Hunter or two in a raid and PvP means that you could be a monster to both Melee and Clothies if played right. The downside is that you can easily mess up in epic levels. It takes a lot to play good. There is a reason why there is the term Huntard.
For pvp, Hunter is top tier. For questing, you are the best. For instances, you are hated because you can roll need on EVERYTHING. For Raids, you are decent and needed for tranq shot on 1 or 2 bosses. I think you can Feign Death and goblin jumper cables a healer for wipe recovery.
I played a Warrior in Vanilla. If you are “Very” Competitive, you would be wanted both on PvE and PvP.
The only High Warlord (Grand Marshall)rank I saw in Vanilla was a Warrior in my realm. My Warrior reached up to Lt. Commander. I could say Warriors are on the top of the food chain in Vanilla. It depends on what weapon they use.
On PvE, there is no other class that could tank high end stuff other than the Warrior. Druid Bears and Prot Paly’s are considered low end tanks. Highend raiders would want Warriors as their tanks. If your Warrior would DPS, they are arguably the best DPS’er out there. If you have Zinrokh, Destroyer of Worlds early, it would be hard for other classes to outdps you. When you get Ashkandi, people would want you to DPS instead of tanking.
On Hunters, on PvE DPS, I was not threatened by them on damage meters. But Hunters on BC, they were competitive. On PvP, they are among the best who carry their group to victory while their damage is enough to top the kill blows. Hunters is best played in groups. They dont want to solo a Warrior on 1vs1 unless they outgear them. All in all, to me,Hunter is fun… they are somewhat OP becoz they have the original Aspect of the Cheetah and Scatter Shot.
I played a Hunter on Beta Classic. What I can say is that… it’s painful to level up a Hunter becoz of the shortage of their bag space. They need quivers for their ammos. They need water for mana and food for their pet.
Getting the level 40 mount is a bit painful unless you make money from your profession. I recommend Leatherworking if your goal is to get the level 40/60 mount fast. But after the level 60 mount, I believe enchanters and alchemist would be richer.
On PvP, I saw it clearly that Hunters are anti-rogues with their OP serpent stings. Against Druid, when they run, activate your Aspect of the OP… i mean Cheetah. Perform Scare beast when threatened in melee. Skill cap with Hunters is so high. It means if you are “Very Skilled”, you would be very important in raids. You would be asked to kite some elites like in UBRS. They will ask you to Tranq shot all mobs that are on Frenzy. Hunters wont have aggro issues since they have Misdirection opener and feign death to reset the aggro to zero. Unlike my DPS Warrior who always die when his threat exceeds the tank.
If I would play in Classic, I think I would choose to play a Hunter. I can handle the ammos, pet happiness, and mana management as you can drink after feigning death. But I am quite doubtful on its Traps. You cant lay traps in Classic when in Combat. You can feign death and trap but wasting the feign death is a bit no-no to me.
It was lots of fun.
There were some immersion aspects that I enjoyed, but have been removed in current retail.
You had to feed your pet regularly to keep it happy, or it would actually leave you!
You had to purchase and maintain a supply of ammo. (I still have a bunch in my bank!) As you crossed level thresholds you could get better ammo.
Pets were not standardized. It was fun to hunt down unique pets. Standardization sucks in general imo.
Bestial Wrath was the sh!t!
We didnt have camo (which is why I went Nelf).
You could melee a bit. You had a melee snare and a couple strikes. So if you got caught not being able to kite, you could at least kick them in the shin.
It was still a fun class though, good dps, amazing solo-ability.
I always like the concept of the dude traveling the world with his trusty pet, so it works for me.
Like alot of people this hunter was the first i rolled back in bc… (Did race change to worgen in cata). I have many fun memories…some of defending auberdine…others of goofy adventures in dungeons with my raptor pet.
I just took 1600 bullets (a full quiver) to Wailing Caverns and ran out before the instance is over. I really don’t care of any of the immersion talk; I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. Removing ammo from Hunters was a good thing.
Then why even play it?
That is a full 8 slot quiver, hardly enough to do large instances with.
Buy or craft more arrows and put them in your normal bags until you get a larger quiver.
Even if it was a ten slot, he’s going to need to do that.
Warrior is very desired in all aspects of the game. This character is a vanilla hunter though and I regret nothing. If you are any good you will get a raid spot because the bad hunters just make the good ones look even better.
I ran out of ammo exactly once in Vanilla and ever since, I’ve been obsessed about filling up my ammo pouch/quiver every single time I hit the town, even if I only brought 30 bullets/arrows.
Granted, I’m a LW (since Vanilla; I never changed my professions) and I enjoyed farming leather so much that I often was ahead on my LW, which meant I always had access to larger ammo pouches/quivers compared to other Hunters.
I imagine it was a much larger and more common for Hunters who didn’t take LW in Vanilla. Hmmm.
I’m playing hunter, if you’re alliance you can do Duskwood quests and get a 12 slot quiver that increases atk speed by 11 or 12% also I forget. Good enough for me for now, never run out of arrows
hunter you have one thing to do in raid aside from dps…tranq shot.get broken tooth or kingbang and melt people in pvp.
King Bang for PvP was a Wrath thing. A bat from ZG was the other PvP pet.
This…i took up engineering and mining so i could keep ammo topped off. Also better bullets…
Was a dwarf at the time
I think both are solid picks to be honest. You will get to do all content and will be fairly competitive. I would pick the one whos flavour appeals to you the most.
One consideration for you would be whether you like playing in groups vs solo. Wars aren’t strong by themselves and struggle in pve/pvp without support. Hunters are much more self sufficient but do not bring as much to a group as a war.
Another is gearing. Raids will be stacked with warriors which will make getting the best gear an absolute pain , especially considering weps/accessories/leather will also be rolled on by other classes. Hunters gear is itemized in a way that’s unique to them (mail with agi/int) and raids take less hunters which means less competition and faster gear progression.
Hunter scaling was absolutely garbage in Vanilla. Either that or Hutners are just lazy and didnt feel like trying by the end of Vanilla. You start out in MC doing pretty respectable damage. Then by the time Naxx rolls around you are only doing marginally better damage. Just wait until TBC to play a Hunter, they get A LOT better then.
One of the reasons a lot of classic Hunters are engineers is because they can make bullets. You don’t need an anvil to make bullets so engineering Hunter’s would carry a couple of slots full of bullet mats.
They, if they ran out of ammo in an instance, they could just make a full ammo pouch worth of bullets on the fly.
Leveling a hunter in classic will teach you the foundation of hunter survival skills. You will be a better hunter for it, but it is the worst possible iteration of our class build, especially since they didn’t do it correctly. (I hear scatter/freezing is broken?)
