Warships in the Alliance and Horde

Some of you may not care, but have any of you taken into consideration how small the warships used by the Alliance and Horde are?

Since many fantasy genres take inspiration from medieval culture and warfare, it would make sense for them to use old galleon sized ships, but World of Warcraft has elements of the colonial era too, making me wonder why neither side has made larger ships yet.

What are your thoughts on this situation? I understand that the real war is on land, but it would be nice to see Blizzard expand the lore regarding naval warfare in the wars between the Alliance and Horde.

Boats don’t hold up to magic or wildhamners so well it seems.

That may be true, but that won’t really make a difference when both sides have mages, especially if the enemy has over 120 cannons on a single ship, which lined up to turn your ship into sawdust.

We have the lightforged ship.

The Vindicaar (the lightforged ship) hasn’t really gotten involved in the war, it’s mostly just orbiting Azeroth and sending in soldiers to aid the Alliance.

One frost mage to jaina the water, one fire mage to ignite the wooden ship. Gg.

Also we had boats in garrison missions, it was weird.

We have the iron horde ships now, which are fairly large aircraft carriers

Have you seen how big the keeps and barracks and, well, everything is? The boats are a size that are reasonable as quest targets while not being overly huge, and that let them maneuver around when a quest calls for it.

Also, yes, technically we have ironclad paddle steamers with armor-piercing cannon, so all these wonderful lovely wooden Kul Tiran and Zandalari ships are basically obsolete.

Oh yeah, I forgot the Alliance has Ironclads. I guess it makes sense now that the ships are Corvette sized, they would lag the servers like crazy if they were the size of real ships like the HMS Victory or others.

Oh yeah well I have 121 Jaina Plot Arcane Cannons.

I forgot you did too, cause they’ve been pushing woodboat fantasy hard

You know, Chelleybee mentioned earlier that the Lightforged Draenei have a large mothership, which I also forgot about for some reason.

Why couldn’t we just use that ship to orbitally bombard Ogrimmar and end this war more quickly? Sure you could say mages would make an arcane forcefield or something, but I don’t think they have the ability to react fact enough to do so, Ogrimmar would probably be a smoking pile of rubble by then.

Unless the Vindicaar is only a transport vessel and has no armaments, in which case this war is pretty even then.

Jaina’s ghost ship was pretty damn big. But yeah most ships here are pretty small.

Not only could you do that, jaina can take out org alone

The war was prolonged purely for plot

Well since the recent era the Eastern Kingdoms have largely been a stand alone continent, so I can imagine that does is influence their development of naval technology quite a bit.

Then again through, the Iron Horde actually did have quite large warships, and they certainly did look more advanced then what Azeroth Horde and Alliance have.
At least with Zandalar and Kul Tiras though, it is quite clear they have a strong tradition of bolstering their ships with Magic, so they may not have advanced the tech itself very much.

There’s more than a little artistic license going on regarding ship sizes, just like with building and city sizes. It’s best not to think about it too hard.
