For whatever reason I cant reply to any of the people asking for warrior tanking help, so I’ll post it here. (Im sure these forums work a lot like reddit so this will likely get auto deleted instantly .. so I may/not put too much effort in this post)
-Heroic Strike.. No. Skill is garbage and really you should never use it unless single target, have excessive rage built up, full sunders, and fully confident in your current threat on target. (I chose this as the first mention because anyone who disagrees is not a real prot warr and will filter straight to the comments or away from the thread instead of the wisdom listed below -other than this the rest is in whatever order my mind chooses)
-Other than for Charge or Retaliation, going out of defensive stance is forbidden, especially with wrath version of revenge for damage.
-Engineering. Nades + 1.45x threat multiplier (throwing in any other stance than defensive is a waste) …means you have a wonderful early aoe skill for a moderate to large group of enemies. The goal is to do enough initial damage that healing (which is aoe threat) won’t draw aggro. (Range have to exceed your current threat value *1.3 to steal aggro)
-Thunderclap. Obvious. Spam
-Revenge. Obvious. Spam
-Sunder. If target is boss and group includes physical damage then 5 stack. If pulling a group, then you dont have to use much past initial until revenge procs.
-Taunt. This matches highest threat currently on target and grabs aggro.. THIS is NOT an opening skill.
-Watch healthbars of enemies. If enemy is lower than others and you arent targeting, your probably going to lose aggro. (Anticipate this and wait the moment you lose you Taunt.
-To steal aggro melee has to do at least 1.1x your threat. So if you have a threat meter (like the on I made) once you have ~50% of the target hp as threat.. then he is yours forever (unless can drop threat)
-Rage. Unnatural rage gains are aoe threat. Blocks/parries/dodges that gain 5 rage means you just gain 25 aoe threat on all mobs. Multiply this by the number of occurrences and your have enough to disallow healer from stealing. (Full rage bar disallow you from benefiting from this.. this is what cleave is for)
-Shield block. 2 free blocks, usually 1 but potentially 2 revenge procs , 10 rage, and 50 aoe threat. Rotating this with revenge is a no brainer and should be priority for threat and damage.. which is more threat.
-Blood Rage. Is for aoe threat! HOWEVER it seems to only work on mobs that have already some threat value from you. 10 rage is 50 initial threat, this is enough build rage from blocks, shield spike dmg etc into thunderclap/revenge threat. (Rage threat multiplier is 5x)
-Cleave. With rage gain from block and now parry/dodge (similar to wrath) you have plenty of rage you need to constantly be dumping so you dont cap out. (Prioty goes to thunderclap if 3+)
-Do not chase one lost enemy especially by turning your back on the others. Taunt range in WoWf is massive (and should always be off cd) but if your group can manage allow the one who stole aggro to bring the mob to you.
-Undead touch the grave heals give you heal amount* .25 aoe threat. Every bit matters; Every bit is considered.
-Dungeons with mobs few levels higher. Your pretty much screwed, your going to feel foolish…cause how do they know youre missing every attack and if you cant get threat you have no rage and then your taunt spammed off cd misses and you have 8 more seconds of cd to look like a moron… but do your best.. and yes party members are going to try to cc which means no threat from damage and so that they can land more hits as stunned cant parry etc.. and you have to really on taunt. Taunt is you best friend here, but it will miss, just like all your other skills a lot. *Thunderclap seems to hit more often and bloodrage aoe threat will be helpful. (You can also use rage pots for burst aoe threat but i dont like spending money) .
You judge the value of all abilities by how they effect threat. Bastion (prot talent) is “All damage”.. how will this effect Thunderclap, shield spike, nades?
I only play prot warr.
