Hey, folks. I’m not an experienced Warlock or very good at the game in general and I was hoping to get some advice here on a few issues.
First I was wondering which spells I should skip or not train to save gold! I know the 40 Warlock quest gives a free mount but I want to be able to have a safe amount of gold at all times.
On gold I was also wondering if there were any class specific ways of earning gold or silver. I’m thinking for professions I might go Enchanting/Tailoring to make bags for myself and my friends so another way of making money would be rad.
I don’t know if this is relevant but my friends want to play on a PVE server I figured I’d put that in here incase it makes any difference. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
I played a lock to 60, go with damage and void walker or succubus (depends on what spec you use to level), and you don’t have to worry about gold for your mount til 60.
The Voidwalker is hot garbage. Go with imp (or voidwalker to tank a mob with just one DoT on it), and Succubus at 20. She does way more damage and will make you level faster by far.
Don’t buy spells/books you don’t need. You’ll probably only use succubus (solo) and imp (groups), so you could just skip the books off the others. The hound you could have skipped entirely because the quest is an awful waste of your time and you won’t even use the pet. Just wait until 40 so you get around faster and plow the quest!
Warlock probably has more junk spells than anyone else. You don’t need to buy half of what’s on your trainer. Many things are far too situational (shadow ward), pointless (detect invis), or irrelevant toys (eye of kilrog). You don’t need any of these things. The only curse you need to train up is agony. Many spells work just fine at R1 so they need not be trained up (drain soul, soulstone). Some spells serve very little purpose because you already have a spell that’s logically better (drain life > drain mana).
Warlock is just one giant mess in this game. They had to change so much for BC that it’s practically a whole new class after that point.
on the subject of spell books for your demons…if you dont plan to use the demon till a higher lvl wait and buy just the highest book when you can…as of now you do not have to have the prior lvl trained to them and can save the coins that way
shadow ward is great for when you are going against shadow casting mobs…and around 50 if you want a nice place to farm 48-51 lvl mobvs you need detect invis and go to raven hill… nice place as the mobs can only be seen with detect…and they drop mageweave, raw coinage…and a chance for BoE Rare/Epics ( i got a pair of Edgemasters there farming shards a few months back)
The fact that you deliberately sought out shadow using mobs that most people probably never fight doesn’t change the fact that 99% of mobs do not use shadow, and most players are not going to seek them out as you’ve done. I really don’t know why you felt the need to cherry pick out a spell I listed and try to argue against it. If you want it, then go train it, and don’t worry about how someone else feels about the spell.
Making money at endgame is going to involve DM east solo runs. Because herbs and mining nodes are uncontested in there, those are your two key money making professions (dreamfoil, gromsblood, and ghost mushrooms for herbalism, or rich thorium veins for mining). You could do both mining and herb with this setup, or take enchanting to shard the hundreds of greens and blues you’re going to get. My lock is mining/tailoring but I dual box with a resto shaman who is herb/enchanting. You can solo DM east but the resto shaman trivializes it while scooping up all the herbs and DEing the greens/blues.
All the money you save by skipping spells and demon abilities is made back in 1 hour of DM:E farming so I wouldn’t really sweat it much tbh. As a fresh 60 having mining and herbalism and doing DME (probably as SM/DS, but Sm/Ruin and Ds/Ruin are viable too) will make you plenty of gold for all your skills, epic mount, bloodvine items, etc.
I’d caveat this by saying that on a PvP server, these spells can be much more valuable. Junk buffs can protect real buffs from purging, detect invis has obvious implications, shadow ward as well.
Eye of Kilrog can also be fantastic if you’re creative with it. Very good for locating quest objectives, traversing caves, etc.
It doesn’t help that they designed DoT based pet class, that cant use DoT’s or pets in group in content lol. You either use a phase shifted imp or sac succubus. Even in dungeons where you technically can use DoT’s they’re pointless because by the time your dots are up the mob is dead.
Pick one demon, and train it. Ignore the others until you get to 60.
Enchanting/Tailoring is good for making gear for you, but you won’t make gold until late levels. For gold making, pick one, and then get a gathering profession as your second.
The problem with the VW is it’s alot slower. Succ does like 5 times the autoattack damage, its essentially an extra dot. Drain tanking with succ and dark pact is significantly faster and you have almost no down time.
So the VW isn’t bad per se, it’s just the not the best way to go about it.
Also you only use a wand till 30 or 32. I don’t remember off the top of my head which level you get rank 4 drain life. But that’s when drain life overtakes wand damage
But voidwalkers are bad, at least from level 30+ when you start acquiring damage gear. When your VW has a fresh rank of Suffering it can hold aggro for most of a mob’s health, but after a few levels it will lose aggro at 75% and not regain it. Switching to a succubus or felhunter and draintanking is much more efficient at mid/high levels.
Not if you’re DS/ruin. In raids it’s put up a curse, spam SB. In dungeons it’s put up corruption, spam SB. and even in dungeon if the mob doesn’t last the full duration of corruption you’re better off just using SB.
In classic warlocks were good idea, we have a very interesting and diverse toolkit. The issue is 90% of that toolkit is worthless in most content.
