Warlock spell visuals need an update

So, I’m leveling a warlock alt currently, and I’m honestly shocked how underwhelming warlock spells look nowadays. Warlocks used to hurl huge carpets of fire at their enemies (Incinerate), green fire dragons (chaos bolt) and could transform into demons. Now incinerate is just… a bunch of fire sparks? Shadow bolt has no skull anymore. Metamorphosis gone for no good reason imo. Playing warlock in SoD and Wrath just looks better.

Yes we throw tiny fire sparks at our enemies, but at least they still hurt.

What? You don’t enjoy gently rolling a sparkler across the floor to kill your enemies?

Come on

Seriously though, incinerate looks like utter garbage. It doesn’t even look like fire, it looks like lava. It’s terrible and needs to be reverted either to WoD version or even the OG version

There’s a very good reason metamorphosis is gone. The spec was completely changed and the theme is very different than it used to be. Metamorphosis doesn’t really make sense in this iteration of demonology.

New chaos bolt is the best looking spell we have ever had, IMO.

Incinerate has always looked bad.

For the meta thing - the whole point of Warlocks is to control the fel, whereas Demon Hunters go beyond that. Hence DH now get meta, just like in the lore. The rework to Demonology is better than meta was for the spec, IMO.

Nice post, but I disagree with you, which automatically means you’re wrong. ^^

After playing sod…maybe at least a branch of the demo tree should be metamorphosis again, its cool as heck. Dark apotheosis at least

I recently made a lock because I was interested in the demonology tree, which seems refreshing and well designed. So I am coming from the perspective of not having much nostalgia.

But yeah a lot of spells and abilities show their age and look pretty awful, namely dark pact, unending resolve, and burning rush. Demonic circle is also a major eyesore to me. A lot could be done with them, especially spells like burning rush that are used so frequently.

I had the idea that for some spells a big bubbling Gul’dan style cauldron would plop down in front of the warlock as they cast. Or perhaps it could be an ability and used like a turret (you get a buff when casting near it, or you could interact with it and summon a random demon/buff from it like roll the bones…etc). Just random thoughts, but I think the cauldron idea would help emphasize class identity. Soul Well is kinda close but its a missed opportunity IMO to not use this idea more.

Incinerate and shadow bolt are the biggest offenders. They gotta go!!! :cloud_with_rain:

Yep bring back the OG visuals just up the resolution and details! Hell I’d even be ok with the vanilla quality. We went from throwing fire and skulls to candy bits…

I wish we had Malefic Grasp (and it’s visual) instead of DS for affliction.

I’m not a fan of incinerates visual and think it could look significantly cooler/more impactful. I love chaos bolt tho!

Shadow Bolt… I think I miss the triply shadow bolts from MOP. That, combined with the skull visual, was frikin awesome.

Yea, old SB, CB and Inc were quite better and felt more powerful. I miss those. (What I don’t miss is was that ugly arc Chaos Bolt would take to reach its target, kinda ruined it.)

Afflic got a bit of an issue which is: the only spell there is Shadow Bolt and Drain Soul. Everything else feels non-existent. Something about DoT design made them nearly invisible.

A possible solution would be: don’t change spell effects on target, but instead make some spiralling effects around the Warlock based on each spell cast.

Agony - red
Corruption - purple
Siphon Life - green
UA - A mix of all or brownish/black
