DS/Ruin is the highest single target DPS for a 60
Each raid will want ONE SM/ruin lock tho

For leveling you want affliction

For solo farming at 60 you want SM/DS

For PvP a SM/ruin or SM/DS does fine

Depends what your looking for, and at what level

Pie spec…what kind ya got?

leveling / solo = 30/0/21 sm ruin

raid dps = 9/21/21 demonic sacrifice ruin

pvp = 7/7/37 deep destro

Cooking would probably be the best pie spec.

Depend on your focus on the game:

Leveling: Any Dark Pact variations 31+/X/X

Grinding/Solo Play (at level 60): SM/DS

Raiding: DS/Ruin.

PvP: Any SL variations (more gears dependent), NF/Conflag or other deep Destro builds.

Those specs are the best at what they do but they are very one dimensional. That’s why I picked SM/Ruin for the versatility. Here’s my take and experience:

SM/Ruin vs. DS/Ruin in PvE (grinding, dungeons, and raiding)

On paper, SM/Ruin is 5% behind DS/Ruin. In practice, the gap is almost none existence that it only comes down to gears and lucks with crits/misses.

SM/Ruin has the niche of able to have pets out. Very useful on fight like Garr when you can have VW out to Torment through banished adds and maintaining the same DPS while DS/Ruin will lose 15% damage. Or felpup out to self dispel the mana leech on Baron Geddon to independently keep my DPS up. Having extended range on Drain Life (or Affliction spells in general) allows me to keep myself up on Rag when healers are running too low on their mana to spare some heals on me (Rag is too far for the DS/Ruin locks’ DL range).

In dungeons, having the pets out allows me to solo CC Urok gauntlet with Succubus or dispel hexes on tank with felpup (when there’s no priests) in my LBRS runs.

For grinding, I spec into 5/5 Fel Concentration (giving up Imp CoA since I will be using other curses most of the time anyway). It’s basically a drain tank lite making grinding and soloing a lot of world contents a breeze.

In regards to PvP, SM/Ruin is pretty good having access to both powerful nukes and dots. You can either play around with seduce > shadowbolts or fear into full row of dots. The build is very flexible in PvP.

Just my 2c. I don’t like to constantly respec at 60. If your guild only allows one SM/Ruin lock, try to fight for that position because so far for me, it’s the most fun spec.

Thanks. I tried to state PVE but my iPad changed the wording. This was very helpful.
