I’m curious to hear from the community. Do you guys feel Warlocks have a high skill ceiling? This goes for aff / demo / destro. Maybe if your feeling spicy seperate it from PvE and PvP Perspectives.
This ones skill ceiling is the floor tbh.
Yes we have more then 3 buttons to press it a lot of positional play its not a DH class lol
For pvp…
Really depends on the spec/patch/etc
Sometimes we have patches where anyone can play it and sometimes we have patches where only good players can play it.
Good point PvP especially
Pretty big variance based on spec and fight type (ST, AoE, 2-3 target cleave). If I had to rank it from lowest to highest skill ceiling it would probably be:
ST/AoE Destro
AoE Aff
ST Aff
Cleave Destro
ST/Cleave Demo
AOE Demo
then big gap between this and Cleave aff which is probably the highest skill ceiling.
The lowest two you’re literally just spamming rain of fire/chaos bolt or seed with cooldowns. No need for any planning or resource management. Just press the buttons when you have the gas.
ST aff you’re using MR which requires pooling shards to spend when you have all available dots up.
Cleave destro is about always maximizing havoc windows which boils down to banking shards and conflagrate charges to get full value on cooldown which requires a bit of planning.
Demo is about maximizing your tyrant which can come down to rng a good bit but a newer player will usually mess this up quite a bit. Rotation doesn’t change between ST or cleave.
Demo AoE is a little harder because this is when you’re starting to mix in implosion and that can really make or break your damage.
And then Aff cleave is really hard to do perfectly even if you’re just chilling on the target dummies. 2 Targets is somewhat reasonable to play perfect on a dummy, but at 3 it becomes almost impossible to play perfectly, and then you obviously add in actual fight mechanics and things get crazy.
Really big variance all things said.
The easiest specs can be played close to perfectly without much practice at all, but I’d argue aff on cleave fights is one of the highest dps skill ceilings in the game right now.
I haven’t played since Phase 1. In castle Nath I had a 13 button rotation as affliction. I was always top damage because affliction wrecked back then, our 2nd place dps was a moonkin that used convoke and our third was an arms warrior who used condemn 40% of the fight. Not saying warlocks should always be top but if you have to press the most buttons to get through your rotation you should be near the top. Every time. The game should reward you for having a more complex rotation.
I wish thats how it worked. Then my SP would be 50 times higher on the damage meters with all the buttons and convolution SP has.
Locks absolutely has the most micromanagement of any caster/ranged dps. Tested out all the ranged classes during the leveling xp bonuses this last two weeks and most are pretty brain dead to operate, just cast things as you have them on cd and the game takes care of the rest with cleave or single target damage pending how you want to buff your baseline toolkit with talents. Warlock seems to have you adding on more and more buttons with talents making for a very high ceiling of play and addons are most certainly required for any degree of success.
Wrath talent trees and playstyle of aff/demo lock will always be my favorite era of the class.
this is exceptionally well put - im inclined to agree with pretty much everything
+1
nah destro hardest spec in the game
only haterz will disagree
for pvp yes. for pve just get a few wa to tell you when to press things and profit
