Warlock RP

What is the best way to publicly RP a warlock post Legion? Do we still need to dial down our “warlockiness” in public, hide our demons, wear regular clothes, etc?

Any tips or advice on Warlock RP in general?

Will still have to do most of your business in secret and away from the public eye.

Remember, as a warlock; you deal with magic that makes your soul irredeemably evil regardless of whatever good intentions to may hold; you traffic and collaborate with creatures of pure capital ‘E’ evil and damn people’s immortal souls for your power. Even the most sadistic mundane orc warlord can’t hold a candle to that.

That sort of thing is only going to be accepted by like minded mages and cultists; and even so, any Warlock with the slightest amount of sense is going to be wary of other Warlocks.

Or well, that is unless you are a Blood Elf or Forsaken. Forsaken are relatively accepting of even the cruelest forms of tools to achieve their aim(with the exception of necromancy which is a sore spot), and the Blood Elves are very liberal as well, even though they may not have the same enthusiasm after Kael’Thas antics with Fel magic almost caused Quel’Thalas to be destroyed… again.

That’s kind of hard to swallow? So there is no “using evil to fight evil”. I am irredeemably evil even if my ultimate intentions are “good”?

No, that is not what I said. Fighting evil with evil is and will always be an option, even if your peers might not accept your methods.

All it takes is just being willing to pay the price.

What is the price?

Sorry I am not trying to be obstinate. I really have a feel for this guy and I want to RP him correctly.

Not to worry, curiosity is a good thing  (in most cases)

As a Warlock, it can come in a number of ways.

If found out, you may become a social pariah or worse among your kin group. Orcs in particular are not very accepting of the use of fel and demons in the Horde.
You run a heavy risk of succumbing to your own power if you fail. Being a warlock is probably the single most dangerous class profession you can ever choose, in return for giving you access to a relatively quick increase in power and access to some of the most powerful magic available.
And fel magic, if you use it extensively, will inevitably leave a mark on the person to a lesser and greater extent. And if we are to believe Sylvanas’s story that there is indeed a hell for souls that commit evil, then Warlocks are probably going to go there even if their intentions were pure.

The best way is to RP your warlock in the way that seems most fun to you(provided you’re not breaking ToS).

It really depends on who you ask–opinions on this will vary, and fel magic is more taboo in some cultures than others. As a general rule–it’s probably best to dial it down a notch when possible in public, and assume a more normal appearance. Fel is likely a bit more tolerated given the acceptance of demon hunters and all that, however, keep in mind that we just finished fighting a war against the Burning Legion. While perhaps not as dire of threat as they once were, demons and fel magic are still terrifying to the average citizen, and you’re not going to win any favors by stirring up the populace.

How much you need to dial it back though depends on where you’re RPing, and who you’re RPing with. Fel magic is a bit more tolerated by races like gnomes, blood elves, and Dark Irons, who see it more as a tool to be studied and used carefully. The Forsaken push the boundaries a bit further and are more tolerant. In other cultures, fel magic may have a solid conclave of practitioners, but they may be in hiding due to the studies being taboo(hence why you have the all the warlocks doing their work in the basement of the Slaughtered Lamb in Stormwind, and not openly practicing).

Likewise, your mileage will vary depending on who you’re RPing with. If you’re RPing with a group of good friends, you’ll be able to push the boundaries further than you would be able to with random walk-ups in public.

Also very good points to take into account when writing for warlocks. Despite your intentions, fel is a very volatile and corrupting magic, which is one of the main reasons it’s taboo and not openly flaunted in public. That’s not to say a character can’t be open about it–but a character that is will likely find themselves dealing with more questions from a disgruntled populace than a character that isn’t open about their practice.

Fel consumes life/souls as fuel doesn’t it? It is inherently destructive so if you use it try and keep that in mind. You can use it for ‘using evil to fight evil’ but there is a cost to using it.

As for warlocks, I would probably not pull any demons out icly in public. Even if other players are open minded it would, realistically, freak people out depending on where you are. Behind closed doors with your guild/rp circle may be another story, but marching down Stormwind with a demon out probably isn’t a good idea.

Hi Pyrates!

There’s a lot we could go into here…

I see that you mention post-Legion so I will try to share some of my views on what the events of Legion meant for the state of the warlock craft.

So on one hand you have the participation of the Black Harvest in the effort against the Legion. Their role has most likely made world leaders recognize the benefits that warlocks can bring and their usefulness to the factions.

On the other hand, the public’s opinion on warlocks will be at an all-time low due to the recent demonic invasion.

In BFA we have seen warlocks openly operating under the 7th Legion in Vol’dun, and it’s not ungrounded to say that they are relatively accepted by their respective kingdom’s governments. Socially however their situations has likely not changed and the public views them with extreme aversion.

When it comes to the RP policies you establish for your character I will recommend the following:

  1. It is illegal and punishable to publically keep the company of your demons.
  2. It is acceptable to wear warlock garbs in public.
  3. It is not acceptable to cast your magic in public or visually display notable amounts of Fel Energy.
  4. The rules becomes muddled the farther away you are from the capital, and one should consider the ideals of the local authorities. Consider the context of every situation. Having your imp out when you are traveling through the countryside might cause you trouble but it probably won’t get you hauled off to the Stocks. Having it out in the capital city, where the law is the easiest to enforce, will.

Feel free to reach out to me if you are pursuing further workshopping.
The Harpist’s Grimoire and the Order of the Lamb community are great resources for warlock RPers and dark artists.

Thank you. Could I hear more about the Hapist’s Grimoire and the Order of the Lamb community? I sent you in-game mail.

Greetings it has been quite sometime since I have taught others the dark knowledge I know, Raveintis Embermane, at your service.

To RP a warlock well you must consider a few things. Where are you? How do the population act towards such things? How are you perceived? As the others have stated summoning a felstalker in the middle of Stormwind for fun is not going to go over well. Even if you were a good guy warlock the general population only gets to see what is happening right now. The peasents and peons of the horde and alliance are a dull, easily frightened people, inciting panics which might force guards to be one involved regardless of your intentions… Summoning a demon in the wrong broad public is no different than firing a rifle into the air in the same situation… Demons though capable of civilized actions are unnatural killing machines…

This depends on the location once more, though humans and orcs are quite notable for their aversion to the fel, Undead, Dark Irons, Gnomes and Goblins are not so prejudiced… Practicing warlock arts in a city controlled by these races are more likely to accept warlock magic provided you don’t prove yourself incompetent and a threat.

This is a common misconception, though many demons are Infact evil aligned not all are and quite a few have chosen other paths instead.

Fel hunters are not innately evil, the fel hunter is not that different from a animal, killing and eating. The only difference is it’s inate resistance to magical attacks. In a city devoid of mages a fel hunter and a lion would make the same impact.

Infernals and Abyssals are not innately evil being hardly different from the magical guardians of Silvermoon. The only difference is the magic empowering it.

Observers are not aligned with the legion as a race but employ their services to many including the legion in exchange for tasting new Magics.

Several demons including Impsy, Sal’salabim, and Avrus have shown demons can be good individuals, Avrus becoming redeemed by Elune and Impsy saving the universe by preventing the collapse of the twisting nether caused by time magic. Note that several demons if not a great majority are evil because for most joining the legion isn’t a choice, and fel magic naturally makes one aggressive.

Fel magic requires life in order to be created. This does not mean you must sacrifice a small child, a few strands of seaweed or green grass will do!

The price for using fel magic is its potential to corrupt, the magic itself permeates the areas it’s used like radiation causing demonic mutations and increased aggression over time. As a warlock you must have the will power to resist such aggressive thoughts…

This is a great example. Using fel for war and using fel for fun are to wildly different things.

These are general rules accepted by RP servers but in most cases do not have diffinitive lore in game. This is more like common sense laws.

Unfortunately the comp I use for WoW is out for repairs and it will be difficult for me to get in touch with you in-game until it is fixed.

I don’t mind putting my discord here so send me a friend request!
