Hi, I’m new to classic and have leveled a warlock to 20, I’m having fun with him but was tempted by a friend to play a rogue (he play rogue and lock too). So it makes me wonder which class is actually more fun in pve and pvp?
I quite like the playstyle having a pet to tank for me, and of course being a ranged caster I can nuke and dot from distance, but seeing how my friend played his rogue (also about level 20+), I think his it’s more straight forward and direct (dps), but not sure about rogue’s mobility and etc, I’m more into pve and I’d be grateful to get any info on this towards pve gameplay for both classes, tyvm!
Rogue in classic for PvE is a pure dps machine. Warlock in classic for PvE is a dps support class. You lack the damage dealing capabilities of rogues and warriors and mages, but you provide utility and support with soul stones, health stones, and summons.
For PvP both classes can be monsters. A PvP spec’d rogue with all his cooldowns thats able to get the opener can 1v1 just about anyone at level 60. However without cooldowns the rogue becomes almost a glass canon. Warlocks absolutely destroy just about everyone in PvP.
Both classes PvP skill cap is high compared to many classes, warlocks PvE skill cap is very low, rogues PvE skill cap is middle tier.
Also worthy of mentioning, If you’re not getting boosted in dungeons all the way to 60, warlocks level fat faster than rogues do.
Both are pretty great classes. Warlock is easier for soloing typically and can solo things a rogue could not, but stealth is very useful. I enjoyed finding ways to get through impossible-looking situations while leveling my rogue.
Let me say this, leveling/questing wont be your mission for ever. You head towards the endgame, even though you will still roam around in the world and do endgame quests/farm stuff etc.
At the end of the day it solely depends on your playstyle. I am a born Rogue and I love being in stealth and have the possibility to panic-button-press my vanish in order to get around certain situations. I love melee dps and a faster playstyle.
Now you could be that guy, or you could be the caster guy, standing further away, doing caster stuff, being a little more supportive (health stones, ports, curses etc.) with a fair amount of DPS.
Id recomment you to start playing both. Just try out and see what type of player you are. You will experience the need/desire for a Twink anyways, why not play both .
With TBC coming up, the warlock will be more viable in both PVP and PVE due to Rogues falling off (rather in PVE than PVP).
Yea I was worried the rogue will have situations where he can’t solo, but from my readings, rogue can almost do everything the warlock could, if not better…hence I have this dilemma.
Yea was about to start a rogue, to which level do you think is sufficient to compare between classes? (to my likings)
first toon i ever played was a warlock mid vanilla. i enjoyed it and don’t regret it. i’m more of a do it myself type of player. prefer solo by far but i’ll do dungeons/raids.
if you want to be one of those obsessed with min maxing in raids it may not be the best of choices but most people are overly obsessed with this and hopefully you don’t become one of ‘those people’.
for solo leveling and questing its definitely lock for me.
stealth is fun. that’s all i really have to say about rogue for leveling/questing. I do enjoy it. that’s the only reason i’d recommend it for the criteria you’ve given. play with it for ten minutes and you’ll probably get over the stealth fun anyways.
to each their own.
to add, i had a lot more fun during burning crusade with rogue vs lock. i’m not really fond of solo/open world rogue play for pve in vanilla.
i made a level 10 rogue and i already see differences, when i played lock i barely have to regen (life and mana was almost full at all times), rogue on the other hand had a few close deaths and regens etc… but its too early to tell anything
I leveled rogue first in classic just so you know but i also leveled it 100% with someone else which makes it ridiculously easier compared to when i solo leveled rogue during tbc.
around 20ish rogue will have more tools. have to use all your cc a lot like gouge, especially during bad pulls. definitely need to level first aid and bandage every opportunity you get(during cc). I hate the vanilla sap.
you’ll have a lot easier time with warlock but rogue is interesting when things hit the fan and you pull off every cooldown just right. rather satisfying.
can always do both but i’d focus on one first cause its a long trek. that said get both to 20 if you want to get an idea of which you prefer. because 1-20 is nothing compared to 20-60.
i’ll flat out say i recommend lock over rogue for what you seem to want out of them but i don’t want to pigeonhole you into a class either cause i have fun with every class.
Yea was about to start a rogue, to which level do you think is sufficient to compare between classes? (to my likings)
Difficult to tell. Endgame PVE is a little different from leveling. In any case progress on a toon is not lost, so just go for it! You will probably have most of the class-defining spells around lvl 30-40ish, even though some classes scale better with gear which makes it a whole different experience.
oh, and don’t forget to visit the demon trainer near your warlock trainer. don’t be like me the first time i played with pets that had only their basic skills until 50+. it makes things a bit more rough. I relied on fear and seduce a lot. though at first i’d only get the voidwalker ones unless you like being broke.
yeap i read alot of guides and leveled pet’s abilities lol, i cant imagine how did you survived on void torment 1 till level 50+ coz even at level 17-18 they already cant keep mob agro on torment 1…
yea i will focus on one for now… thats why didn’t want to play something and regret my decision at higher level, gonna be tiring to start over again especially this is my first classic char…
well. i enjoyed it a lot in tbc. but if i recall it wasn’t the best in arena. i’m not an arena guy so that was entirely irrelevant for me and why i’d agree with your entire comment. but i’m sure someone will come along and correct you based on its performance in arena while excluding everything else.
lots of fearing and draining and stones if i recall. I also switched to succubus when i got it cause it held aggro better than my VW and it has CC. it was a game changer when my VW could hold aggro again.
Just to add to the opinions, I also played both a lock and rogue. The rogue is certainly fun with stealth, poisons, sap, and even pickpocket BUT in my opinion the lock is far more survivable and does level faster. I used to run the “drain tank” build and could easily solo 3-4 mobs by dotting one, pulling another, repeating until I had 3 or 4 and then howl of terror, drain life until they dropped. Most of the time, before I got to the last one, the first one was dead. Mana tap my imp and start all over…extremely little down time to recharge health or mana. Was a blast for sure.
Honestly it doesn’t matter which one you choose, they are both awesome classes.
I main a Lock and have a Rogue alt which I love as well. Both are fun in Pvp and both are fun to raid with. I will say the Warlock is still my favourite class but it a bit of a biased opinion since I’ve always played one.
some has suggested that dark pact is best used with succ due to almost unlimited mana… but from my readings, some also suggested imp passive mana to go with dark pact… which one is actually better?
hmm i got a feeling i’m also more biased towards the lock, i will play a rogue to test out nonetheless…
I talked mainly about PvE since this is what OP is aiming for. And while hemo mace might be stronk on its own, so is warlock pvp. Also in arena you will probably loose against the numerous Drood/X combos if you aint a pvp crack.
oh, i forgot to mention i had a 20+ mage which couldn’t solo certain quest bosses, which the lock manage to do it solo and he was 3-4 levels lower than the mage (not saying lock’s better than mage in pve, maybe just the way how i play both chars)… so im just curious will this be the same case as rogue where they could also solo stuffs easily i.e quest boss/ elites…
