Warlock leveling

I’ve been watching guides and I feel like I’m getting rinsed. Is red ridge just hard lol

I’ve tried both using imp and voidwalker but my health just gets destroyed

Am I supposed to use fear more? What’s am I doing wrong

It becomes easier when you get the succ at level 20, since she puts out more DPS and therefore can reliably hold aggro and kill mobs. I’ll let a warlock main talk to this in more detail, though.

Redridge is also a strange zone. The mobs and quests ramp up quickly, so you can’t reliably finish it all in one go as you probably did in Elwynn and Westfall - despite the game shoehorning you to go there at a low level.

Good job on those level 18 whelps! Time for you to take on some level 26 gnolls.

I’d suggest going back and running DM a couple of times until you’re level 22ish, or doing some of the lower level quests in Duskwood, before returning to Redridge.

Cheers man. I watched a video saying succ wasn’t that good but it was before classic server came out. I’ll go do that

You mean head to dusk wood and kill 19 wolves and spiders

If you have VW make sure he holds aggro…are you getting grimoires? It’s important that you train them too.

Ok I have no idea what they are. He doesn’t keep agro at all

Okay, so when you go to the lock trainer, there will be a “Demon Trainer” next to him. Buy the “Taunt” grimoire from him. Make sure you meet the level requirements for it. That should fix your problems

Exactly. There is a quest for the wolves, a quest for the wolf meat, a quest for the spiders, a quest for the spider legs, and a quest for the spider venom. Not least to mention the XP from all those kills. Nice and grindy, and good for fleshing out those intermediate levels between Westfall and Redridge.

It may. The reason VW is so bad at aggro is because it deals very little damage, and its “taunt” is not a true taunt - rather, it only increases threat by a set amount. Even with that, you’ll usually be doing sufficient damage to out-threat the VW.

Succ addresses this by having more raw DPS and therefore holding aggro more reliably (though she is squishier and will die faster).

Also, OP, there are more quests in Redridge than meets the eye but some are hidden behind somewhat arbitrary chains. For example, you won’t unlock A Baying of Gnolls until you complete the quest to deliver horseshoes from Goldshire - naturally. And there is a related quest to collect supplies from the gnolls you are killing but you won’t unlock it unless you fish some guy’s tools out of the lake.

If you don’t have the big boi IQ to figure this out, you’ll miss a lot of quests and make levelling in Redridge even more difficult.

Ah yep! Cheers

You’re supposed to do Duskwood and Redridge concurrently. When you hit an orange wall in one, you’ll have quests yellowed up in the other.

I also sprinkle in some wetlands quests. You can actually probably do almost every quest in Redridge, Duskwood & Wetlands before you even out level all of these zones, if you focus on the green quests in each of these zones first. Classic requires a lot of zone hopping for efficient leveling.

I’ve leveled multiple warlocks in classic. The VW is always better at holding mobs.

And that’s ok. If you’re single-targeting, you only need the VW to hold the mob for a little while. If there are multiple targets, the VW can hold the mob against 3-4 dots, allowing you to pick up a second mob.

The Succubus is better later in the leveling process, because you can use her as a mana battery while you drain-tank mobs.

use void
and just dot
dont pulla gro

even when improved witgh Demo talents the voidwalker sucks at agro so you gotta take it slow
send it solo the mob then dot 1 or 2 more mobs while keepin them feared

I never went drain tanking with succy. People hail it but it just never worked for me, I tried it mid 40s and I hated it because I didn’t have the points for affliction resist spells and I never went back. Not saying it’s not good or even considered best, but I hated it and loved the way I leveled with the VW.

I personally recommend going down to SL in affliction and never touching drain life stuff. Imp agony, Amp curse, etc to SL, then go down demo for stuff like Fel Dom and Imp VW. Then you return for shadow mastery in the 50s or so.

The VW will never really hold threat over you, but you can get into a rhythm of placing dots that won’t pull aggro while fighting your own mob. A lot of my leveling involved sending my VW off to a mob, pulling another with full dots and by then I could DoT up the other mob my VW was on and not take threat while wanding down “my” mob. And really I could pull 3 or even 4 mobs if I really wanted to, specifically with Amp curse.

Of course this gets easier as you level, all classes are pretty weak early on, but around 30 is when I felt like I took off and once you’re in the 40s with fel dom you are pretty well set between better healthstones, saccing, fel Dom, and a new VW/potential sac. Only advantage I had was being undead which almost removed any downtime since I rotated between cannibalize and bandages 90% of the time.

I also recommend not keeping the aoe taunt on by default as it kills his mana. Macro it and use it when needed.

make sure you get your demon training books from demon trainers, once you hit 20 id start using the succ over voidberry. This video helped me a bit drain tank guide. If you really prefer the VW for whatever reason though, just send mob to attack, put up DoTs and wand.

OP:

The easiest way to level is using the voidwalker until around level 40, putting all your talents into the affliction tree, and switching to the succubus when you get Dark Pact. Then turn off all of the succubus’ abilities to conserve her mana so it’s always regenerating. Now you’ll always have her regeneration helping you.

Make sure to get 5/5 in both Improved Drain Life and Fel Concentration. This way, you can dot mobs and then drain their life even while they’re hitting you.

Don’t neglect your wand, especially early on. It does a LOT of damage for free. Eventually you’ll switch to drain life, and let the mobs hit you while you steal their health.

Avoid using shadowbolt most of the time. It costs a LOT of mana.

Make sure you take two of the following professions: mining, herbalism, skinning, or enchanting. Don’t spend time leveling enchanting if you get it. Just disenchant stuff. Whichever profession you get should be used to sell stuff on the auction house. Get auctionator or tradeskillmaster to help with that (TSM is harder to figure out but easier to use once you set it up).

Level all of your secondary professions: First Aid, Cooking, Fishing. All of these will help you a ton as you quest.

I’m flying with Imp and Affliction.

Some mobs I facetank, some I fear, some I just kite and run away or try and use weird terrain to avoid.

Immolate>COA>Fear>Corr>SL>chase down with wand.

I only ever use Shadowbolt if there is a mob immune to my type of wand (I’ve learned from my mistake and now keep my old wand if it is a different school for this very reason) and I only ever use Drainlife if I’m going to die without it. I found it to be worse efficiency than just wanding in non emergency settings.

I have almost no downtime with life and bandages and since I’m undead cannibalize.

Redridge is kinda tricky tho I deff struggled there before I came back with a few levels on my Paladin.

Redridge can be dicey.

If you’re not in too much of a hurry; I leveled by sending in the VW, dot the mob, wait a tic or 2 then wand. Once I got the hang of how the VW handled aggro, things went a lot smoother. I was even able to juggle mobs occasionally but if you don’t watch it; it can turn disastrous😁.

This is my first lock. I enjoyed leveling this toon.

A good threat addon is helpful for learning this. It also Rollercoaster every 10 levels as he learns a new rank.

I use Elvui and realized it had a decent threat bar that I put in the middle of my screen to make it easy to monitor. I’d probably have a real threat add-on if I was raiding, but for solo play that works well.
