If you have your Imp set to Defensive and you tell it to go attack something that is out of its cast range the Imp will run into range and begin casting, this is totally normal obviously. If you tell it to follow before it gets into range to start casting it will run back to you.
However if you wait till it is in mid cast and tell it to follow, it will stop casting then instantly start casting again and will not follow you. You can spam the follow button and it will just continuously stop casting then start again.
The only way to get your Imp to stop casting completely and follow you again is to move it to Passive.
I assume this is a bug and not how it was back in the day.

beta had a number of pet control issues that made pets extremely annoying…
Ironically I think it was pet passive that was broken/useless on beta… and I typically had to keep pets in defensive or aggressive for leveling, though I got and used VW at 10, and then succubus almost immediately after she was available at 20… Imp from then on was kept in passive just as a mobile health totem in groups.
Sooooo, blizzard is releasing a broken game OR they have an older build for stress test.
I hope and assume the latter because they are probably actively fixing bugs for these last couple weeks. Lets hope.
I’m sad they didn’t give him his hilarious voice-over, which was in 1.12.1 according to the patch notes.
Or I misread the patch notes. I just looked and they don’t say exactly what I thought.
This is a normal behavior for pets, at least for hunter.
You need to set it to passive to disengage.
It’s been a while since I played vanilla, but yeah, I remember having to put the pet on passive to disengage and follow you. Telling it to follow you while it was attacking did not change its attack mode.

There is a bug forum…I’d go there and report it.
pets have been broken all along for both hunters and warlocks.
There’s a blue thread in the bug forum with stuff they have fixed so far.
No, clicking on follow should bring the pet back to you along with that mob that was attacking as it chases your pet.
Many a time I clicked on follow and started running away when death was imminent and my pet followed me until both of us were out of range and the mob(s) retreated. This was on my hunter and recent on a pserver.
