I have an MSI R2 14th gen prebuilt, and the BIOS I have for my specific prebuilt is newer than what is on the website support page. Makes no sense, but yeah. So why is WoW saying I need to update, when there technically isn’t one for my setup? I did however update my Intel Chipset drivers, and get the same error still. Now I’m paranoid to use my PC. I don’t have a K CPU, so I was supposed to be spared of the stability issues as per Intel themselves.
Yet.
WoW is warning you that if your mobo manufacturer hasn’t come through with a BIOS update that includes the 0x12b microcode revision, your CPU is still at risk of damaging itself, and (from a more selfish Blizzard perspective), Blizzard can’t prevent or fix crashes caused by the faulty BIOS.
Weird. Before I bought this computer, I was told that F CPUs were fine. I have an i7-14700F Only reason I bought the PC after it was on a crazy sale. I would have gone for the AMD equivalent but it was $1000+ difference.
That sucks. There is a new MB BIOS someone showed me that is basically the same as mine. Only difference is it’s for the retail MB. Mine was part of a prebuilt MSI R2 PC and have been told to never update a retail BIOS to a prebuilt, even if the part is the same.
I think this is generally good advice, because the manufacturers have a habit of tailoring and tweaking prebuilt BIOSs and flashing a generic would undo that, perhaps even to the extent of bricking the board.
It does bite, but MSI should come out with the correct update eventually. And the CPU is under extended warranty if the worst should happen.
I’m on a 12th Gen Intel, but the next CPU I buy is probably going to be AMD.
Yeah I normally build my own computers, but this prebuilt had 100% the specs I wanted, and was roughly $1000 cheaper than the AMD equivalent prebuilt, so I said forget AMD lol. And when I looked at the time, allegedly F variant CPU weren’t on the list, so I went for the deal. Only good news is I’ve had this PC since Sept 2024, and so far It’s been amazing.
I feel that to my core. It’s hardly worth it to try achieving the same prices as the prebuilts with a few mods.
Usually prebuilt system makers build to highest profitability per unit, that means they will cut costs where ever possible. If that means using parts from 5 years ago that they bought cheap so they could give customers systems that aren’t likely to last more than a couple years they will do that.
Looking at a few cheaper model offerings for gaming computers lately and over the years they all seem under powered and over priced doesn’t matter if it’s laptops or towers. Build your own and you’ll be much happier in that you built a system that’s going to last many years.
Sweet, playing on an Atari 800 here…smoov
any chance you can walk a super non-techy through this? ASUS motherboard, “z-790 Gaming” not trying to fry my comp. thanks!
If nothing else check with a local pc technician, but I’m muting now.
