Warcraft Books and Comics

Is it worth buying/reading?

I mean, I’m kinda a story freak, i enjoy researching lore stuff and i spend a lot of time doing it.

So, im wondering, are the Books and Comics relevant? I mean, the lore from these books/comics, they got retconned too much or they are still up to the actual lore?
The canon ones, i mean.

Those of you who read those content, do you recommend?

Just asking to see if i won’t waste my money on something that isn’t relevant anymore

Kurog Grimtotem was introduced in the last novel.

A lot of story beats are put into the novels. Calia Menethil is another example.

If you like them, read them. If not, don’t.

The one he showed up in was a short story on the site

Don’t need to go on a book hunt for him

If you take them for what they are, YES.

People here expect Warcraft Books to be like Tolkien, and when they are not they quickly start chugging HARD HATEORADE!

Truth is, most books are very simply written, which frankly its on-par for the game.

I own all the books since Arthas, and I’ve enjoyed them all.

Eh, same thing.

It’s a non-in-game source of media.

It’s something you have to actively look for outside of the game.

Many of them are needed to understand the story in game. Blizz really needs to stop this practice and make external media supplemental to the game, not have major elements of the story in it.

Eh just didn’t want someone to think they HAD to buy something to see Kurog.

Some of the books bring nothing to the table or build on lore, like ‘Exploring Northrend’ where you can just play wotlk and see the world state and thats what the book talks about, barely. while some bring good lore to the table. But there are some that are good.

Indeed, they’re “books”, not “literature”.

That said, I tried reading one of the early ones and I personally couldn’t get through it. In fact, I could get that deep into it. It was weird, as I’ve read a lot of stuff, but I couldn’t get into this one.

The names were offputting to me. Silly, to be sure, but they just turned me off.

Funny, same thing happened to me with the first Transformers movie. It was great until they started talking to the bots.

The books are supposed to be pretty good, a lot of folks like them. I liked the Warcraft movie, I read the lore in the game, but having page after page of it, just didn’t work for me.

I do gotta say that the comics are funny in their own way. Some panels make me giggle because of the art style

Funny, I had this experience early on. I played in the Alpha and through the Beta, and I learned a heck of a lot more about the lore of WoW playing WCIII than I did running around the world collecting pig ears.

It’s no wh40k, that is for sure.

Okay.

The books are great! Illidan, Stormrage (two separate books) the War of the Ancients Trilogy. Even Arthas (which some hated I think), but would I look to them for lore…
The Older Books Blizzard pulled a “Legend-Mark” by retconning most of them, which is sad, what’s worse is the Established Lore in Chronicles is slowly becoming retconned as well. I’d suggest books, but I have no idea what’s canon anymore!

Cataclysm has excellent novels. Wolfheart was particularly interesting as it portrayed the battle for Ashenvale much differently than the game.

Yes they are all worth it. Some better than others, but they’re a way to surround yourself with WoW stories and characters. Read all of them, don’t skip.

I had so much fun reading all of the books, but that was many years ago, when they seemed more…relevant.

Not sure what that means exactly, but many of those characters I was so fond of have died since then, maybe that’s why it feels like such ancient history now :woman_shrugging:t3:

I’ve only read the Death Knight and Shaman manga.

I enjoyed the art and story for both, however I don’t recall seeing a whole lot of crossover into the game with the Shaman manga. The Death Knight one however, had references to the point where one of the earlier quest lines in Borean Tundra is a direct continuation of the manga storyline and includes an NPC who, if I remember correctly, is still hanging around in-game somewhere.

I’ve only read Wolfheart. I enjoyed it.
