Warcraft 2 Movie ever?

Will there be one?
The director wants to do another one. But its Legendary's call.
For now, it looks like they have said no.
It made money and was the highest grossing video game based movie of all time.
Yeah, but it didnt do as great here in the U.S. as they had hoped.

No, it didn't.
Ugh.

I didn't care for the Warcraft movie at all. The writing was passable at best, and it played things FAR too safe when deciding whether to appeal to new people, lore buffs, or people who just play the game and don't care that much about the story.

It would've been better if Blizz and Legendary turned it into a Show on, say, HBO or Netflix. Just my opinion.
It cost like 160m to make and only did something like 47m USA, 213m Chinese -- pretty much tanked and bombed in every other country. In this day and age, that's considered a bomb because the Chinese numbers aren't what is actually reported by sites like BOM.

"In China's state-run system, Hollywood movie studios may only see a maximum of 25% of a film's gross. What this means is that every dollar a movie earns in China is worth only half the amount of a dollar earned in America. If Universal takes home a quarter of Warcraft's Chinese gross, then that's only $55 million. Not a number to scoff at by any means, but certainly not a blockbuster take-home, and definitely not enough to justify the oft-repeated claim that the film is a runaway hit and that a deluge of sequels is inevitable."

Also, I believe ... don't quote me on this, but I believe that a lot of fans were disappointed that it was live action.

Probably because it was a decent sized let down.

Even as a huge Warcraft/blizzard drone, I was very sad after watching Warcraft.

Live action was fine, I think they used the wrong storyline. But the interesting parts of Warcraft lore aren't something you can single out in a movie. It would've done better as a episodic TV series in my opinion.

I don't think any investor would think investing in a video game TV series is a good idea though.
They should have kept to the wow lore. There were at least 12 million people who had played wow at some point, rewriting the warcraft lore to appeal to a so-called "wider" audience was a complete disservice to the fans that had gotten wow to that point.

I don't know why movie producers frequently feel the need to butcher everything they touch. I like the way anime shows and movies are pretty much identical to their respective books and mangas, and I liked the way the Hunger Games series kept mostly to their source material.

Actually it made over 400m Not really a flop even if not a billion is seen as a flop for a high concept movie today.

They probably should have gone the MCU angle, use the canon but build your own timeline.

What made MCU work out so well is you barely even needed a passing knowlege of the comic books to enjoy the movies of the MCU.
I have been playing warcraft since the first game came out over 20 years ago. I enjoyed the movie and would like another one but following the alliance storyline or Sylvanas's. I wasn't expecting much from the movie since I don't like the Orc storyline but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was made.

Like every movie, if your expectations are high you are more likely to be disappointed.

Doesn’t matter. China loved it and it turned a profit over there. Like he said:

Honestly? It was a lot better than whatever that the Drak Tower movie was (I'm a huge, huge fan of those novels. That movie really didn't have much to do with the Tower asides from main character names).

As someone that knows the lore of the game, yes, adjustments were made. Some of them were awful, but at least it was closer to the lore- or even the feeling of it- than The Dark Tower movie.

Plus what Stealydan said.

For them to even consider making a sequel to the Dark Tower, they would literally have to just start over. Warcraft wasn't like that for me. I enjoyed it.
it did great over seas so its possible
Per Wiki it had a $113 million production budget and made $434 million world-wide. It would have had to have made $450 million to break-even based on its production budget. I don't understand the accounting of that but my guess is due to the cost of marketing it and studio overhead.

I had read that eventually a sequel will probably be made, but it will only be marketed overseas where it has a chance to make money. Like the Resident Evil movies.

Edit: It was a flop in the U.S., grossing only $43 million, which is the single biggest factor when considering a sequel.
I will have to say this, for me Warcraft (the first RTS game of the franchise) Had a weak story to begin with even the second game was weak as far as story telling goes. This was in fact what the movie was based off of. Understanding this made me forgive the movie and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I also feel the same way with Warcraft 2. The story line is weak at best. With Warcraft 3 and the expansion frozen throne the storytelling got much better and I still go back and play that game from time to time. WoW’s ingame lore helped fill in gaps with the story telling of all 3 RTS games.

The biggest issue I see is that Warcraft is best known for WoW not the RTS series. And one reason I see the movie did so well in Asia (mostly China) is because they have been playing, competitively, both Warcraft and Starcraft RTS games more so then here in the States. And that it what the movie ended up panning too intentionality or not, the RTS fans of the franchise not the MMO fans. Add the fact it was catered to the fans and left little to the people outside of the gaming community, ( lots of people have bad experiences with MMO gamers and their addictive mentality) it turn people off simply because it was looked at as a game movie.

That's not how it works. Revenue generated in China largely stays with the Chinese. And its popularity in China was helped greatly by the heavy involvement of state actors in a way unlikely to occur again.

If it had made a profit, a sequel would already have been made
I think their timing was bad. I think a horrible warcraft movie would have done better if it were released before LK ended
