Was it increased to 5 characters? I was watching a Belluar vid and he mentions it was 5 as opposed to the announced 4. Tried to look up info, but couldn’t find any.

Still 4, but it looks more bland than before. They were in poses, now they just stand around.

I believe at Blizzcon, one of the presenters mistakenly stated it was five characters.
Newer info revealed it was only four.
So it is only four.
Personally, I am just hoping someone makes an addon so I can keep the original backgrounds because my characters will not be participating in this.
When they get together, it is in a proper city with a clean tavern featuring good food and good drinks.

I wish Blizz would just make it a baseline option to opt in and out of. I love the new alt-friendly features, but it doesn’t mean I want my alts to just be chilling around a campfire together.

Do we know for certain there isn’t an option to opt out?
I don’t know if Blizz has commented on it officially, but the few Youtube videos I’ve watched to learn about it seem to believe it as a fact that they don’t have an opt-out option. 
That seems really dumb, imo. Considering only 4 out of like 20ish characters on that server are on my login screen, it would have to change to the other original login screens when I choose a character not in that group of four.

I think it’s still 4. Although I wish it would be bumped up to 5 as I play 5 classes usually. I’m also disappointed by the the fact that they ditched the poses and instead went with the generic stand around look.

They did mention that they’re planning to release additional scenes over time, which might include some of the classic backgrounds if there’s demand.
Why would it have to do that?
What do you expect will happen when I select a character not in that group of four? A blank screen? 
That it logs you into that character, like it does if you pick one of the others?
When you select a character on the login screen, it shows you that character standing there. When you select a different character on the login screen, it shows you that character standing there.
What are you on about?
Not at launch, but likely after Season One starts, we’ll have new Warband backgrounds to collect.
It’s already a gripe of mine and I hated the Dalaran-esque encampment we had, now a random forest camp, because I felt it didn’t feel the thematic of my characters.
Thankfully, I saw somewhere, that Warband backgrounds will indeed be a collectible item at some point, just they won’t be ready out the gate.
“For the launch of The War Within, you will only be able to assign four characters to this one scene. We are working on building more of these scenes for you to collect in the future though. We’re excited about earning more of these scenes as we play through the expansion and hope you will be, too!”
I hope Cinderbrew Meadery is one of them, I’d use it.

simply don’t place any of your Characters in the favorites list and they’ll keep the original backgrounds

I wish Blizzard would allow me to opt-out of the whole thing, including anything and everything account-wide. I build my characters as individuals and especially, in this case, hate that my characters are being forced to share reputations.
But given that Blizzard is doing this to consolidate data to reduce costs, there is zero chance they would implement that.
I didn’t realize it had changed, I looked it up and yeah, that looks stiff and uninspired and the new, plainer background just highlights it.

I was actually being a bit tongue and cheek with that.
Although, if I end up having to deal with this, I will admit knowing that there will be better, more suitable, less outdoor-rough options for my characters does make it a little easier to swallow.

Officially? No. But I am hoping addon will take care of it.
But what I meant was I won’t be using the feature. I won’t be choosing the characters, it won’t be part of my character’s stories, it will just be a screen shot the same as it is now.

That would make me very happy. I especially enjoy my worgen in her native setting as the roses of her staff and the roses in the pic match.
All your characters are on the same screen… War Band at the top all others just below. Or an I not understanding your problem?
