Wand auto attack?

I do not remember the wand having an auto attack during Vanilla, in fact I remember repeatedly clicking the shoot button in the plague lands, but as I try to level using the spirit tap + wand specialization build I find my wand auto attacking and it is literally killing me.

How do I make it stop when I want it stopped?

I find myself wasting 3 or more global cool downs trying to stop the wand so I can heal/dot/shield myself and it has gotten me killed more than once as I could not even fire off a psychic scream to get the adds off me long enough to book it.

This could really proving to be an excellent leveling technique, almost no down time, if I can just solve this problem.

Put shoot on your action bar and disable it when you dont want to use it

if you hit a spell hotkey it should turn off autowand automatically. you just have to wait for the gcd. don’t be spamming your shoot key cause that’ll just put it back on cooldown

Jumping and moving interrupts it too.

It was auto back then, too…

Either reclick to stop wanding and scream, or move a tiny smidge, then scream

yeah…I just step backward one step and it seems to stop so I can switch to casting
I tried a macro or two, but they seem to not behave like I thought they would.

I have tried clicking the shoot and, like the rest of the action buttons, it seems to be a case of having to get the exact timing of the click or it ignores it.

Moving works some times, strafing is better than forward or back, but not always.

It was auto toward the end of vanilla, but at the beginning, you needed to keep clicking.

The bit that sucks is the gcd. You need to do something, you better not need to do it in the next 2 seconds.

Makes sense, by then I was not really doing much beyond managing my mana. In BC and beyond I never bothered to use them again.

I usually tap my W key and then press the next ability I want to use when I want to stop wanding, I do this frequently while questing and dungeon when I need to stop to pop a heal on the tank.

Huh… i don’t remember that, but i barely remember last week let alone 15y ago…

But, to the OP; you can spam an ability and it should fire off (and cancel the auto) if your wand is slower than the gcd. Some wands are a smidge faster, so you have to move or cancel otherwise the wand fires again

I will give that a try, I gained 5 levels trying to figure out a way to make it end on the current GCD, but so far I just cannot seems to get then right rhythm.

yeah stopping your wand is a bit fiddly

I usually deselect my target or target myself or someone in my party to get it to stop

Sounds like your doing something wrong in your rotation. Priest leveling is all about front loading spells.

This is my rotation for every pull:

  1. Power Word Shield
  2. Mind Blast
  3. Shadow Word Pain
  4. Wand till they start running
  5. Mind Flay

This lets me end the fight with nearly 100% mana thanks to spirit tap. If that isn’t taking mobs down, you need to either fight mobs closer to your level, or upgrade your wand.

Unless you taking on multiple mobs, you should never have to heal mid-fight.

I have been averaging mobs 2 levels above me but most of the time my dying was due to an add.

Things went better last night, I went back to the tree and pick some level 5 mobs to beat on me while I watched the action buttons closely. I then tried a few of the techniques suggested and at least got to the point that I was only losing 1 GCD on most attempts and 2 at worst if the toggle off failed to read properly.

In the end though I am still having a blast.

[Update]:

I tried something that seems to be working. I added a Macro that does a /stopcasting.

This way I can just click it a few times until it recognizes the command and, as it is not a toggle, an extra click or 40 will not start it up again.

Seems to work enough for me.
