Wait...shouldn't Dracthyr be shamans too?

Considering their connection to the earth and elements of life?

Just because something has a connection to nature doesn’t automatically make a druid or shaman.

They have access to earth magic through the evoker class via Deathwing. But that doesn’t mean they can commune with the elements as a whole.

yet somehow goblins can.

Goblin totems are basically machines that force the elementals to do their bidding. They’re not communing with the spirits like other shaman do.

Goblins have a long history (before becoming shaman) of interacting with the elementals.

They do not force the elementals to do their bidding.

“Unlike the others, goblin shaman follow the moto of “Controlling the elements for Fun and Profit”. They are an extension of their society’s single-minded devotion to making a profit; to a goblin shaman, elementals are potential customers with whom they can negotiate and enter contracts. They tend to be a bit more forceful in their negotiations than the other shamanic races would like, though not as forceful as the Taunka. Some goblin shaman mechanically modify both their totems and their elemental minions. To shaman of other races, these methods can seem unorthodox or outrageously disrespectful to the elements.”

Straight from the Shaman page on Wowpedia.

Forcing an elemental carries the connotation of the dark shaman, binding the elementals against their will.

Entering in a contract requires both sides to agree.

Enforcing a contract both agreed to, while seeming unorthodox, is still not what I would consider “forcing” someone to do something. Outside of “forcing someone to do something they agreed they would do”. Which I feel is some added context.

So Dracthyr should be able to be shamans because while they are not communing with it, they do have a greater connection to it.

Dracthyr shouldn’t be Shamans because they have some inherent connection to the earth and Life magic. They are created from the essences of the 5 dragonflights that were Ordered by the Titans. They have a strong connection to the Arcane. They have a much weaker connection to Life magic.

But Life and Order are not Elemental. Shaman deal with the non-living parts of nature. The Rocks, the Fire, the rivers and streams, the storms and winds. Druids work with the other half of nature, the living half.

There’s two reasons Dracthyr SHOULD be Shaman however:
First, the Dragons themselves were once Elementals that evolved into the proto-dragons. This was basically the entire reason for Dragonflight, that the elemental proto-dragons that refused to be changed by the Titans violently resisted and were locked away. So how much of that Elemental essence remains? Up to the Devs to decide.

Second, the Primalists had teamed up with many Dragonkin. They were able to grant/unlock control of elemental forces for many. How many Dracthyr might have sought to learn about their past and about their potential? How many might have sided with the Primalists ideals, but perhaps not their methods? If the Ma’nari can be repenetant, and thus the red skinned Draenei, can the Dracthyr?
