Wait, why did Sylvanas leave?

She won the duel. You can debate if she cheated or not, doesnt matter, she won. She wouldnt mind cheating, but i’m pretty sure she technically didnt cheat.

Then she insults the horde, but again, why would she care if everyone saw her insulting the horde, she’s still the leader right?

Then she randomly flies off for no reason. She won the duel by beating saurfang, so Thrall and company have to stand down right? that was the whole point of the duel. So she won the day and didnt even have to do a big battle.

She won. Why would she leave? It makes no sense.
Why did all the troops open the gates?

Nothing makes sense.

She spat on the horde and told them they are worthless. What fool would follow her after that, even the zombie fanatics gave up.

The horde are no longer useful to her. They will always cling to hope, or eventually waver in how she wishes to end the alliance.

It’s either that or a temper tantrum. She tends to have those.

There were two Horde leaders left supporting Sylvanas. Gallywix and Geya’rah. This is Geya’rah on Sylvanas after Sylvanas calls the Horde nothing:

Overlord Geya'rah: Keep an eye out for any who still obey Sylvanas!

Overlord Geya’rah: And remember the lesson to be learned from her.
Overlord Geya’rah: She was a strong warchief. She did whatever it took to achieve victory.
Overlord Geya’rah: But she fought only for herself, not for the Horde!
Overlord Geya’rah: We were nothing to her!

Sylvanas might have killed Saurfang, but Saurfang won that challenge.

What do the other leaders say about Sylvanas?

If she thought she screwed up by saying the Horde was nothing, she could have just said something else to spin it differently, like saying that the Horde which followed Saurfang was nothing or that the Horde’s ideals were nothing. Let’s be real, the entire situation was contrived as an excuse to have Sylvanas blast off, give Saurfang his death, and end the faction war without having to design another raid. It wasn’t made to make sense.

Because we needed a forced peace to return to the status quo.

Most of them are talking about Saurfang rather than Sylvanas. These are a few lines I could find from Wowhead, though:

Thalyssra:

When Suramar was freed and Elisande defeated, there were many once loyal to her who had nowhere else to turn.

They sought forgiveness. And we gave it to them, to heal the rift that had been torn between us.
Sylvanas’s hatred was a plague on the Horde. Let it die with her departure.

Lor’themar:

A part of me will always wonder if this would have happened had I acted sooner. If I had confronted Sylvanas in the early days of the war. If Teldrassil hadn't burned.

It is not an easy thing to watch a dear friend tread a dark path, to recognize when they have gone astray. I thought I knew her, and Saurfang has paid the price for my error in judgment.
I have tasked the Farstriders with tracking down both Sylvanas and Nathanos… though I am unsure we can find them at all. They were Farstriders themselves, once.
But I cannot simply stand idle while they are out there. Not anymore.

Lady Liadrin:

With Saurfang dead and Sylvanas... absent, Orgrimmar is without a warchief. Meanwhile, the threat of N'Zoth looms over us all. We mustn't allow Orgrimmar to descend into chaos.

Remain vigilant for any signs of N’Zoth’s influence… along with any who cling to Sylvanas’s twisted ideals.

For someone that is supposed to be a mastermind, it was incredibly stupid of her to blurt “the Horde is nothing!” in a duel she was winning. Saurfang wasn’t even pushing her that hard. Between this and the scene with Delaryn, it doesn’t seem to take much to set her off.

But then the game frames this moment as also part of Sylvanas’ schemes (). Lor’themar says the only reason she would have done that would be if she didn’t need the Horde anymore. But that makes no sense. If she wants souls for the hungering darkness, wouldn’t the best thing to do be to let the battle for Orgrimmar happen? And if she, for whatever reason, didn’t want/need more souls, why did she stick around as long as she did? She could have left at anytime, but she chose that moment to quit the Horde. Was she just after Saurfang’s soul? Was he her millionth customer?

Tangent, there is a related bit about hunting Sylvanas and Nathanos down:

Headhunter: Ya be far from home, blood elf. Go hunt for Nathanos in da Eastern Kingdoms. Kalimdor be headhunter territory.

Farstrider: Nathanos was once one of our own. It is the Farstriders’ responsibility to see him brought to justice.
Headhunter: Suit yaself. But remember, he be knowin’ ya ways ta track him. He not be hidin’ from us so easily.

All those are aftermath of her leaving. But what im saying is theres literally no good reason for her to just peace out. She WON. Thrall and anduin have to stand down now.

Why did she leave?

because as soon as she said “the horde is nothing” not many would remain loyal. she basically shot herself in the foot, she won the duel, but that little outburst lost her the war

Sylvanas is more prone to making rash emotional choices than one might think given people tend to think of her as cold and calculating.

It is a ridiculous plot contrivance that probably makes the Devs work alot easier.

Sylvanas is the cause of all the problems. She left on her own, and it is done. The simplest answer ends up being Blizzard’s chosen answer.

It does make little sense. It basically leaves the Horde in limbo. She won. She could have had a lot more dead.

The oddest part is she says the Horde and Alliance made peace sooner than expected. But she was in the know every step of the way. Well, as Sylvanas said, we will know in time.

All that aside… if she won the Makgora, isnt she technically Warchief? Sure, the Horde can reject her, or accept her flight as a resignation, but it seems according to the Makgora, she remains the Warchief of the Horde in title at least?

I can see some Horde purists holding that line, if it is not cleared up.

I mean…she could have tried to spin it. Let’s think of fun alternatives!

“The Horde is NOTHING…but the best damn group of pals an undead girl could wish for!”

“The Horde is NOTHING…but the most adorable group of ragtag misfits I’ve ever seen!”

“The Horde is NOTHING…unless they subscribe to my YouTube channel!”

I don’t mind seeing dialogue from Saurfang. I want to know all of the leaders’ thoughts.

The Anduin/Saurfang-goon answer is that Saurfang blabbed on and on about how awesome “hope” is and knew that that would drive her insane to the point he would vaporize him with hate-magic, and say something mean that would turn the rest of the horde against her.

I think there was still a part of Sylvanas that did think the horde was worth saving at one point, but the fact that the other leaders have turned on her and there is a horde army standing with the alliance to seige Orgrimmar, AND the fact that there was an uprising in the city that the PC had to put down. She’s like “screw this, I’m out”. She left them to their own devices, because at this point, she obviously isn’t wanted- instantly everyone is like “Yep, Sylvanas left a whole 5 minutes ago, I guess she abandoned us, guess we should arrest everyone who doesn’t denounce her immediately.”

The goal was never to win the duel. The goal was to expose Sylvanas, which was a success. Even though she defeated Saurfang, the Horde was never going to follow her now that they knew she didn’t care. It doesn’t matter if she’s “still the leader” - the Horde’s not gonna follow someone who openly doesn’t give a damn about them.

Even if Thrall and Anduin had to stand down (which honestly, no they didn’t), she would never have the support of the people again. This is evidenced by much of the Horde - the Farstriders, the Headhunters, the Mag’har, the Blood Knights, etc. - speaking of actively hunting Sylvanas and Nathanos.
