So Sylvanas gets mind controlled and does a bunch of bad stuff and gets stuck in the Maw, yet Anduin gets mind controlled and does a bunch of bad stuff and gets to go back and be king (even though he sort of suggests there was a little part of him that found the experience enjoyable on some level)?
Where’s the justice? Am I missing some 4D storytelling points here?
You’re not missing anything, I don’t think. It goes:
Arthas: Was corrupted by external forces, did terrible things, acted on his worst impulses, deserves to be forgotten by history, was the worst person ever.
Sylvanas: Was corrupted by external forces, did terrible things, acted on her worst impulses, deserves a second chance but has to be punished for all of the things that she did indefinitely.
Anduin: Was corrupted by external forces, did terrible things, acted on his worst impulses, he’s all good. Gets to be king again. Yay, we saved him!
The difference was that Anduin was just straight up puppeted by the Jailer. You can see him being completely different when the big guy isn’t assuming direct control.
He’s being mopey about how he felt while his body was doing all those things, but it wasn’t him.
Mmmmmmmmmhhhhhh from the cinematic, my takeaway was that he was straight-up mind controlled at first, but got to like it and was more of a more willing participant later on.
That’s definitely not my interpretation of it. It seems more like he’s having issues separating which emotions were his and which were the Jailer’s and is worried that the experience has cost him his connection to the Light. Given his actions and glowy eyes during the actual fight in the Sepulcher I don’t think he had any control at all while fighting.
The difference is what she told Anduin: Being forced to do something, and choosing to do something.
Sylvanas may have been manipulated but she still chose to do the things she did. Anduin on the other hand was never given a choice. He was compelled to obey and was physically unable to refuse.
The only consideration that Sylvanas might be worth is that her soul was split, probably making it much easier to manipulate her. Especially being that the half that was manipulated was tormented and cared only for vengeance for the longest time until not knowing what to do once she got it so she threw herself off Icecrown Citadel.
I imagine having your soul split in half would do a number on most people.
I really don’t like the “he’s gone mad” or “he/she’s mind controlled” or “manipulated” tropes as they are employed in the WC universe. Way overdone, robs characters of their agency, turns characters into 2D cutouts, and has that “it was all just a dream” effect where nothing feels real.
Did Zovaal have coercive power over Sylvanas? Or was she really just duped?
If the first is true (gun to head type scenario), then I’d say her sentence is overly harsh. If just duped, then I guess maybe justice is served.
But if just duped, isn’t she just an idiot after all? And if she’s just an idiot after all, why has so much ink been spent on such a pathetic character just to learn she’s a fool?
That’s just not true. He did more than that. For one thing, he stole sigils to empower the jailer. At least in the cinematics I watched. He was a raid boss as well.
