Fun fact: When it’s below freezing and the ground is covered in ice or snow, the air temperature increases with altitude for a little bit before starting to decrease as normal.
That’s because when the sunlight hits the ice or snow, it gains energy, but can’t melt. Liquid water can’t exist at that temperature and pressure. So it sublimates to water vapor instead. This costs extra energy, making the air near the ground colder.
(ETA: that’s not quite right — what sublimation does that melting does not is carry the heat of formation away with the vapor, which is what makes the ice/snow colder.)
That made no sense to me the first time I saw a “cold day” atmosphere table, so I had to take a half day to go chase down why. But it might also explain why the sun isn’t giving much satisfaction.
