Vulpera Discussion Megathread (Part 1)

Do the High Elves really have much of a race and culture these days? They have no established territories; they abandoned Quel’thalas to stay with the Alliance; and they really only seem to have small presences in Dalaran and the Hinterlands (and Surumar in the form of the Silver Covey). They are a bizarre, scattered people. Void Elves … aren’t my preferred method, but at least they will retain relevance moving forwards into more Void infested waters.

Also … no. The Bilgewater and Gilneans haven’t really seen an advancement of their personal narratives since their introduction quests in Cata (you had a little bit of spitting between Genn and Sylvie, but thats about it). That’s 9 years of pretty stringent neglect; with their primary introduced narratives (the conflict with Gallywix; and the reclamation of Gilneas) being placed on hold. And hell, neither of them hold a candle to the MORBID levels of neglect the Gnomes of Gnomergon (and their players) have struggled under since Vanilla. VE’s problems are small potatoes.

We are dangerously getting close to a high elf discussion, which was not my intention, but I’ll be concise:

High elves way of dealing with magic is not the same as blood elves. Even Ion says that in that infamous “high elves are pretty much blood elves” Q&A. Blood elves take risks with magic and are way more power-hungry than high elves were.

May not seen like much, but it’s a start if you want to move the races in different directions.

This is one of the reasons high elf fans rejected void elves. Dealing with the void is going into a totally opposite direction from what you’d expect from high elves.

Hmm … perhaps I’m just a little worried about how much HE players would end up stepping on BE players toes if allowed. As weird as it is (on here at least) Elf Rpers tend to be a bit … dogmatic; and despite the fact that they abandoned their home, I have this feeling like it wouldn’t stop many HE players arguing that they should be allowed Quel’thalas back if the HEs were actually playable.

Its a bizarre concern to be sure … but I do have this terrible feeling that a HE PC race would ultimately result in arguments of HE players trying co-opt elements of the BEs content.

Oh? let us appeal to this, to justify another recolor for the alliance?

And why he pushes a purple version of blood elf to the alliance?

I’m being obtuse, because I can see the obvious difference between a vulpera and a goblin, but not the resemblance between a junkgnome and a gnome?
Allied races should be semilar with each other!
Draenies similar to Light forged!
Orrcs similar to maghar!
High Moutain similar to Tauren!

Junkgnome similar to gnome!
Vulpera similar to goblin!
Gilgoblin different from goblin!

Then Jinyu similar to Night elf! Jinyus =/= ankoan!
And saberon, similar to Worgen!

Of course yes!

Ahh! Now I understand why you chose gnomes that mutilate their bodies!
Regretful that the hype by those who practices cutting is smaller than by furrys!

Friendly reminder that we can like and dislike things in the game without being ‘evil terrible people’. I don’t like Kul’tirans and would never play one, but I don’t think that they should be removed or not added. It’s simply not to my taste, and that’s perfectly OK. They fit in a certain niche that doesn’t tailor to me. Which, again, is fine.

Mechagnomes are the same. I wouldn’t ever play one myself, I have no interest. I also wouldn’t play things like Mah’gar, Zandalari, humans, DID, etc. etc. not because I think “no one should”, but because I don’t have any interest. Same with High Elves, I’d never roll one myself, they don’t appeal to me in any way, but there’s tons that I know would enjoy them.

The situation comes up with Vulpera too. Some highly dislike them and whatever, whereas I find them adorable and would play them in a heartbeat. Just because one thing doesn’t appeal to someone doesn’t mean that someone is a terrible person at all. And just because something might not appeal to a large audience doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be added either, and all.

We all want different things in this game. My stance is that if it doesn’t destroy the entire identity of a race and rip to shreds the lore/theme we come to love in some fashion, which is my issue with Lightforged undead(I see them as a terrible mary-sue concept that I really would not ever support for lore reasons and lore reasons alone), then it’d be fine to add. Mechagnomes, Gilgoblins, Vulpera, Ankoans, Sethrak, Saurok, anything else under the sun, sure, if it makes sense then I’m fine with it.

Blizzard never said there was a set amount of slots, and they also said they’re taking feedback. Let’s say a race is added that doesn’t appeal to ‘xyz’, that’s OK, and doesn’t close the doors for what you want either. I don’t think it’s a competition and I think we can all vouch for what we want in the end. If Blizzard thinks it makes sense, then they’d go for it.

They’re going to add in concepts they really like as well and not just base things off of players. Mechagnomes and Vulpera might be exploring things they’re really enjoying talking about and fleshing out more lore for. Players will speak up and say, “That’s cool, so what about this race?” and Blizzard can look at ‘this race’, people’s ideas, and determine whether or not they want to use them.

The worst thing we can do right now is turn this into a competition or put down others for wanting a race, or not wanting it as well. But insulting each other over our wants/desires isn’t really the best approach. We all want different things from the game, and that’s perfectly OK. We’re going to express our opinions about it, and as long as we do so reasonably, that’s fine. Blizzard never said there were limited slots or that they’d shut their ears to feedback on future races. The best we can do is talk about what we really would enjoy seeing, and explore logically in lore as to why something wouldn’t make sense as an AR if we do not agree with it.

Otherwise, if it’s just a matter of how something looks, then chances are Blizzard won’t really accept that and lean more toward ‘Looks don’t matter, we’re focused on the story’.

That was TBC. It’s established few are like they now. They’re now all light worshipping weirdos. They kicked out the void elves because unlike in TBC they weren’t willing to delve into forbidden areas just for power.

Let’s not delve into that discussion here.

Glad you agree.

Vulpera are as similar to goblins as Saberon are to Worgen. So if you want Saberon as Worgen allied race then Vulpera are perfectly acceptable goblin allied race. Vulpera and goblins might actually be related. Saberon is just skeleton re-use. They literally come from a different planet.

What does cyborg have to do with cutting? I am pretty sure you need to see a therapist. This isnt’ an attack. I am honestly concerned for you right now. Ok we get it. You don’t like gnomes, or cyborgs. So Cyborg gnomes are just awful to you that doesn’t make them a bad, or crappy AR.

Also my mom is a cyborg (not by choice) so please calm your bigotry.

I wish that particular worgen could understand that… Just because he doesn’t like mechagnomes doesn’t mean they aren’t a perfectly valid allied race.

Ultimately I play all the races. Because I’m an altaholic and that’s how I am but I do favour some more then others.

They are not! stop lying!

They share the same base skeleton. They are no more different then Saberon which you proposed as the allied race for Worgen.

Also “Lying” I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

I think you might need to take a break from the computer, kid. Do your parents just let you have free reign? sighs it is a weekend.

I do not hate junkgnomes! Why all who try to sell junkgnomes as parity to vulperas think so!
I just do not like the idea of seeing the alliance receiving a gnome recolor, again, when they could at least receive something new with this being with vulperas!
If Horde gets gilgoblins, it will be an exact parity and no one could complain.

but push an allied race to ally and a new race to a horde?

Of course it’s something very fair!

Objectively Gilgoblins has the same amount of cultural and biological/aesthetic differences from Goblins as Vulpera.

Mechagnomes are equal to Vulpera. You’re just stuck in the victim complex.

They’re both allied races.

It is.

Because.
You.
Keep.
Shouting.

This is getting a little out of hand. Can I ask that this discussion about potential allied races for the alliance and opinions on mechagnomes moves to another thread? It’s not really related to Vulpera other than using them as a comparison point.

I’m not against engaging in tangential topics. But this particular one is getting pretty heated and it’s not really conductive to the thread or the Vulpera cause as a whole to use them as a reason to complain about mechagnomes. Neither race has actually been confirmed to be an AR yet anyway so it seems a little premature to be throwing around faction bias arguments.

I wonder what kind of racials they’ll have

If we do manage to get Vulpera playable, one thing I’d like to suggest we check is on Pandaria, where you do the questline in the beginning area where the Pandaren sage, I forget his name, talks about your race’s history. I’m curious what will be made for the Vulpera there…assuming it is remembered to be changed and it isn’t just the Goblin-related text. x- x

Quick edit: Actually, this would be interesting for any new races we get just to see what text appears there.
