Vulpera Discussion Megathread (Part 1)

Why?! These races have absolutely no history with either faction or the world. Pandaren, I’ll grant a pass; they existed in Warcraft 3, and to say the least, their continent, the Chinese themes, the characters and storylines, together were fairly compelling-- in addition to a new continent, new races and storylines, the Pandaren came with their own class; it was acceptable, and complete. Unless they (Blizzard) create an entirely new continent with a lot of lore and history for these two BFA races (which I still find to be boring, contrived and silly), and base an entire expansion around them, they’re just not good candidates for new playable races.

There are plenty of races that have existed since the beginning, that are popular, and should be playable long before either of these throw-away BFA races.

High elves? No, we got loreless void elves pulled out of nowhere.
Broken? No, we got lightforged draenei, which should just be character customization for standard draenei.

True. At BEST, these BFA races will be Allied Races. People gotta be delusional to think Blizzard would have either of these races join a faction as anything other than an Allied Race.

Which races would be good for the Alliance?
Can you name one?

I guarantee, that soon we will have arguments explaining why they are not good for the Alliance! Explaining why they do not match us!

If the devs use something that does not have parity in quality and interest to the Alliance, as far as vulperas have shown to be to Horde, it will be a waste!

The Alliance needs a allied race that does for us the same as vulperas or zandalar is doing for the horde!

I do not see a mega treand on junkgnomes, as I see for ogres, elves vampires or hozen!

But the problem with this, is that they aren’t relevant to BFA where this allied race system is being implemented. There are quite a few races that people wanted but they, presently, have nothing to do with BFA. That’s why people want the Vulpera, want the Sethrak, because they are in THIS expansion, they are relevant to the ‘now’ in the game. So where the ARs are newer and don’t have as much existence compared to what many of the other, older, races have
they’re not playable or thought of as an AR candidate because the are not a part of BFA.

I see what you’re saying. It just so happens that what you feel doesn’t coincide with how Blizzard makes the ARs what they are and how to distinguish an AR candidate in this current expansion on comparison to the older ones.

Also no one said anything about Sethrak or Vulpera being a main race, just AR
though there’s really little difference besides major lore that separates a main race from the AR otherwise.

Alliance are mainly human like characters, they decided to introduce 2 monster like (dogs and space goats) but the main focus is to add human like toons, so I think it is more difficult to add races, probably another sub race will be added in the lore, like green humans who drank the legion whatever (not big on lore) , same as green Orcs, but unlike orcs which core race are green orcs and allied race are real color orcs, the Alliance should be added the green humans as an allied race, I think that would be nice.
I can see a lot of them named “WarHulk” “Hulknter” “HulkRagnarok” but I think green humans can work as an allied race, maybe add some more mass to make the original human animation ,like 25%ish bigger than normal.

Exactly. And let’s face it, giving the Alliance a 30% WM bonus is not only unfair, it is absolutely not a fix. If they were to retract it, the FotM players would go back to Horde and nothing would have changed. The Alliance need something cool like Sethrak to make people simply want to play on the Alliance side.

Can I name one? Blizzard can do much better than this BFA junk.

Some races that have been around a long time, that could plausibly or possibly be woven into the playable realm are; Ogres, Naga, Arakkoa, Quilboars, Saurok, Dragonkin, Vrykul, Gnolls, Furbolgs, to name a handful

While I admit some of the races may have lore restrictions or may be considered ‘silly’, I still think they are more ‘fitting’ for Warcraft. Most of those races have a long-time affiliation with the universe and its history-- many are also variations of popular creations that have appeared in fantasy long before Warcraft, and I’d argue none of them look like your run-of-the-mill Saturday morning cartoon animal.

Arguably Blizzard’s worst attempt at an expansion: BFA; its creations within, the farthest from ‘cutting edge’ or ‘innovative’ - worst of all, its throw-away desert people, which are being begged for to be playable
which is mystifying to me. Ever since MoP, it seems like, WoW has become this furry-filled ‘PG’/‘E’ kids cartoon game, something akin to your Disney or Nickelodeon fare, or the ‘Ratchet and Clank’ variety. I’m kind of sick of it.

Gee, almost like opinions are entirely subjective and just because you hate a race idea doesn’t mean it’s actually terrible and childish.

Not just that but because a race is anthropomorphic you go and throw a ‘furry’ catering label on it? It’s a fantasy game
I enjoy the more ‘out there’ races that add a bit of variety than just flavors of humans and elves (no offense intended for any who play as them <3 )

It’s not that the races exist that bothers me. Over the years, races have come and gone and I’ve felt more-or-less indifferent towards most of them-- since most, if not all, have never become playable. There was always a rhyme or reason for everything Blizzard chose to implement or not implement; choices like these weren’t based on the whims of frantic fanatics. Most, if not all races that have become playable, were decisions Blizzard probably had planned for awhile and before there was player feedback.

People really like the High Elves, the Naga and the Ethereals (from BC); many people, over the years, have requested these races become playable. These are examples of races I’m indifferent towards. I honestly couldn’t care if they became playable. Would it bother me if they did? No.

What annoys me, are the legions of players storming the forums, demanding (quite literally) that these BFA races be playable, two of which that are quite arguably Blizzard’s silliest creations yet. And it doesn’t stop there, people are so deluded they think it’s set in stone already that the races will be playable. You don’t have to take my word for it, just read the posts in this thread.

Which again–are things that appeal to different varieties of people. Tons begged for brown orcs and got them. I don’t see why something being asked for is a huge deal especially if it’s well wanted.

  1. Why does it bother you if people are so sure it’s set in stone? Their assurance won’t make a difference on what does happen.
  2. There’s a megathread on most races asked for right now. There’s nothing stopping anyone from making and growing support for any of those races mentioned.
  3. The “me first” idea just turns people against each other and brings bad blood. It’s understandable if you don’t like or support something but claiming that it’s silly or stupid because it’s not one of the old races is kinda hypocritical. This entire game is full of cartoony characters. Taking one race way too seriously and putting down another doesn’t make much sense. Again, different people enjoy different things.

LOL?? Ogre? They are for horde! They can not be in the Alliance!

Malignant to bone! Resume? Nope!

Yep! Good choose! But they will say that they should ally with the orcs, because they are of draenor! At least it was the argument that many used when suggesting arakkoas!

Another evil race? No fit for Ally! Sorry!
And I see nothing in them that reflects something in common with the alliance and yes with the Horde!
They have no appeal to the alliance!

Maybe? But as they are tribal, many people in the horde think they are closest to them and still have the fact that they are a shamen people!
I’ve already seen people arguing that this makes them kind of difficult!

And there is the fact that if the alliance is interested in a Reptlian race, it would be better to use the one already in the current expansion!
If they think we do not deserve sethraks, even worse with sauroks!

LOL?? If the horde revolts at the idea of having High elves, imagine if they give something like dragonkin?
And that kind of unbalanced to the side of ally! I do not think devs should do something like this to the Alliance!

Nope again!
They have guaranteed a race of Viking from 3 meters to ally? Yes, but they preferred to give us a bunch of fat yahoos, inspired by pirates. s

So I do not see that happening 1 and also, people in the horde have already said that vrykuls hate Ally and so it should be easier to be in the horde!

No racial leader, and they’re just mob loot!
Furbolg could but need of much work since they do not use any equipment and its appearance does not attract much Gnolls?
Same as furbolgs!

And do not suggest tolvir, centaurs or any other 4-legged race!
Will not happen!

And as they have already said, none of what you are thinking could be races of the alliance, is pertinent for the moment!

After? Maybe but then, many of them would not be something that the Horde faction would like to see the alliance receiving!

Mostly dragonkin!

And precisely because of that, it would be a disruption to the alliance, they would be something eligible for us!
And this impediment does not occur with something new being done!

Ok!
This is a problem for you, but not for me!
I’m sorry this is hurting you in an inhumane way!

The issue with that was folks wanted them as a skin for our already orc roster but instead they made it a race its own and sold it as something brand new same with Darkiron.

Which in the long run doesn’t really matter, because they got what they wanted anyway. My point is that different people want different things.

People beg for ogres and I would never play one. I also think they’d be a stupid race to have but hey, people want them and it makes sense I guess so why not. (No way I’ll give support to their mega though due to certain people being extremely rude)

Wow almost 3k posts, very nice.

I’d like to say that as the expansion ages, I actually want to play as Vulpera more not less. I’m gaining a lot of respect for the Vulpera, they’re a very interesting race.

But that’s the thing, the Alliance interaction with sethrak started and stopped in 8.0, in the short chain establishing their foothold in Vol’dun. The rest of the war campaign ignores them, 8.1 ignores them, and 8.2 is going out to Nazjatar.

The Alliance plays a critical role in saving the Devoted, yes, but the Horde does so much more afterward. The Faithless, even after Korthek’s death, remain hostile to everyone so they can be world quest fodder. There’s been no further sethrak story for Alliance since Shatterstone Harbor was established.

Vulpera, meanwhile, have a role in the Vol’dun incursion and show up again after King Rastakhan dies. Sethrak do nothing, for anyone, although Sethraliss is, according to someone else I’ve spoken with, supposedly present when Talanji takes the throne later.

Junker gnomes are the only other race with an existing story thread Alliance have. As far as I can see, it’s going to be them.

If they were intended to be a throw-away race/faction, then why did blizz put so much effort into developing those assets when that time could’ve been better invested elsewhere?

Everyone has their reasons, and I won’t pretend to know what those are for other players. My own reason is pretty simple, in January 2005 I logged in for the first time, looked at all the races, and: “night elf
they like trees and nature. Good enough.” 14 years later, that hasn’t changed. There’s still no playable race whose beliefs/ambitions/conduct I agree with, or where I really like their aesthetic (and by extension, I don’t care about transmog whatsoever).

Then they add the foxes and I’m like “oh! Spots, stripes
What a large variety of skin colours! Those eyes match the hue of these pants, and these weapons juxtapose nicely with the colour of those arms. That fat bouncy tail blocks the character’s butt, and is more fun to look at than my character’s heels.” When I look at everything else: “humans are boring, I see those every day irl
elves are tall humans with long ears, dwarves are short humans, gnomes are super short chibi humans, orcs are green humans
” If other people enjoy those, then that’s great, but can one really blame me for getting excited over cute, colorful fox people? (I’m honestly very surprised they added them to the game tbh, I never would’ve expected it but I’m glad they did, and I love how they’re in the middle of a desert where convicts and people that nobody wants to associate with are sent. Hilarious).

We just had an expansion filled with demons/spider people, and sh!tload of orcs w/ missing eyes & limbs before that
and the current one is filled with creepy witches, void creatures, old gods, and a weird pestilent, derelict laboratory raid with a focus on rot/disease/corruption.

The majority of races in the game are likely anthropomorphic, it’s just their cute appearance (I think?) that seems to trigger people for whatever reason. I’ve seen some people likening them to that race from wildstar, so I went and googled ‘chua’ and my initial reaction was “eugh
 what the
that face just pisses me off
 nothx
 holyshhh
” XD So if vulpera elicit a similar feeling for a minority of players, then I guess I can kind of understand their disdain.

I haven’t seen anyone demanding they become playable, only a lot of excitement and speculation.

This cracks me up honestly, it reminds me of that one post on reddit: "I love how Reddit has just unilaterally decided that Vulpera are happening with no confirmation from Blizzard at all. I can’t wait for the sh!t storm if they don’t happen. “We were PROMISED Blizzard wtf”.

A lot of people are just very excited.

The entire game itself is highly stylized, and has always been far more toony than semi-realistic. The vast majority of textures are painterly. All the models have heavily exaggerated proportions and animations.

I wonder how many blood elves will race change

To be completely fair, I’m pretty sure you could dig up some posts I’ve written that could be interpreted as “Demands”, so it’s not an unfair accusation to levy against this thread. I think we’ve been pretty respectful and polite In our requests for Vulpera but the fact remains many of us are here with the hope that we can inform blizzard we like Vulpera.

But Vulpera do belong in the game and in the horde. What makes warcraft special is the mix of many aesthetics and themes including both serious and less serious elements. If it went entirely all in on a serious narrative, you’d just end up with game of thrones the rpg. Which is
I mean, I’m sure there’s an audience for that, but it’s not here.
