So while we were waiting for our wonderful, wonderful new forums I did some scouting around on the PTR and talked with other story forum folks about some of the changes made, notably the Vol’dun incursions started and with that we can get some actual confirmation about what occurs down there.
Okay so heavy subject out of the way first: The Purge Squad hasn’t done much less purging, I mean it’s not melting Fox People alive indiscriminately but even to allies PoV they are doing some pretty horrific stuff to the caravan people. None of which I can link because I don’t have permission to do that but of the things included and done in plain view of the Alliance PC: Murdering a bodyguard AND her courier in plain sight, capturing a Vulpera and preparing to engulf her in fel flames/chaos bolt her face, incinerators do the same thing to captured Vulpera with fire magic, and of course the hilarious overkill of transforming yourself into an ascendant just to murderize some fox people.
You the player can also partake in the pillaging and murdering if you so desire, though the Sandwalker does indeed, hilariously, give you some text about trying to not murder the fox people if you can help it, but Brennadam doesn’t look much better just because you’ve got someone saying this is bad.
The Vulpera have some dialogue changes now to make it clear they were transporting some goods and give you lines about bullying from the Alliance, some claim that the Alliance attacked without warning and the Alliance will indeed yell at you this is all your fault for bringing this both on yourself and the Vulpera.
Make of this what you will.

Oh hey look we’re talking about story on the story forum.
Uhh
I thought they’d whitewashed the Purge Squads pretty good? Maybe those initial reports were a little garbled. Wasn’t there something about just putting down a fear totem?
You can now put down a fear totem, and watch a warlock melt a fox person alive.
Now it’s only slightly whitewashed, but now much more confusing, that’s…good?

It seems really ham-fisted, as though the Alliance has to be written with some “morally grey” acts to make it all even. If the Vulpera are clearly helping the Horde then the Alliance has some reason to act, but the sensible thing to do would be to hurt the Horde, not drive yet another race into their welcoming arms.
I just don’t think this makes sense, from a story or strategic point of view.
You can, at the very least, chop them up with a knife set after you kill them. Sadly without a cannibalize racial you can not physically consume them.

Y’know what would make this more bearable and more evil? Make the alliance more cold/efficient. Kill the “enemy” and move on like it was nothing. “Just doing our jobs” as it were.
EDIT: Hell, you could even go all in on the Morally Grey, “We’ll gladly massacre your families if it means preventing the Horde from doing the same to ours.”

To be honest I would have embraced the Purge Squad if I was Alliance.

The Alliance is so stupid.
How are we suppose to turn these vulperas into scarves if they keep burning them all alive??
I appreciate your dedication to the hard questions.
That said to be more serious, if they want more moral greyness they need to do less cackling evil quests like this(No, the sandwalkers comments don’t help if you’re still boiling civvies alive with fel fire.) and more stuff like the void beasts. Where you can feel cool for being bad, and still feel justified if revenge on the Horde is your primary goal.

Wait…so Darethy, are we talking a My Lai Massacre now with the Despoilers?
Hey let’s prevent this race from joining the Horde by GIVING THEM REASON to join the Horde.
Yeah I don’t know what the writers are smoking either…

It’s more Dak Son then My Lai with all the fire everywhere.
You basically have the Sandwalker telling you ‘hey don’t murder these people’ even while the people doing the murdering are in plain view. They have no dialogue, you just have a Warlock and shaman charging up a fire spell in front of shackled Vulpera and uh, yeah. You also have very clearly marked courier corpses now, not just guards and yes you can choose to not scare the Vulpera and kill them instead, I don’t know if that counts towards the quest but it’s there.
It’s about as jarring as you think it is, you at least no longer have Despoiler incinerators like burning mass graves of Vulpera, but yeah. The Vulpera also have some clarifying dialogue now, they no longer state the attack came from nowhere but now tell you that they were transporting good for the Horde. Something they see nothing wrong with because they have been doing said transport for decades to survive in the desert. A few of them claim that the Alliance jumped them without warning as well.

Becoming randomly evil to push people towards other factions is a time-honored Alliance tradition since Warcraft III.
Garithos and the blood elves.
Dwarves and night elves and the blood elves.
Stormwind and the goblins.
Dalaran and the blood elves (we really have a thing for those elves, huh?)
Almost added the vulpera too, but its been fixed somewhat.

Words can not express how…perturbed I am that I can not grab that commander or those troops and hand the whole lot to Wyrmbane to try and incarcerate.

I genuinely hope you have some kind of dialogue added that basically amounts to you slapping a pair of cuffs on them, especially if this is actually what pushes the Vulpera to join the Horde.

Doesn’t make it less nonsensical.
The tought process behind this story is baffling. It looks like the writters are not looking at those characters as…well…people but as plot devices that hug dogs and donate to charity and 5 seconds later are kicking puppies down the streets just for kicks.
That’s not moraly grey, that’s retarded and contrived as hell.
And there’s the fact that the Alliance, the guys who brag a lot about being civilized and righteous didn’t even try to negociate with the vulpera it’s straight up kill them cause they are trading with the Horde.
Even worse, Blizzard flat out whitewash everything cause it was supposed to be way worse than it is. Oh fun fact. Blizzard doesn’t seem to mind when it’s the Horde acting like a bunch of monsters, but when the goody blue boyscouts are the ones doing it theeen Blizz whitewashes the hell out of it.

Like, destroying the caravan itself (material) is fine, legit military target. The commander letting his troops freaking run rampant and I don’t get to incarcerate their asses? raspberry noises
