Void Elf Paladins: Drawing from the Void

Considering the lore was already broken by the Zandalari Paladins (or re-imagined at the very least), that a Paladin draws their powers not from the Light (or a Representative of the Light, i.e. the Naaru), but from any given source that has enough power, which brings us to Void Elves: Champions of the Void.

Would require a little more of changing in order to work (visually), but in reality is only akin to say a Shaman or Druid change. Paladin spells now take on a distinctly void-touched visual, with Wings (Avenging Wrath) taking on a darker, more Void-y appearance (slight changes to model and color of wings).

Since we know that Void and Light are two sides of the same coin, that the Void Gods are Naaru, and vice versa, that they (along with elements comparable to them, i.e. Ashbringer) may swap between such states as well, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to put Void Elf Paladins into the game, albeit with slightly unique visuals indicating that they draw from the Void instead of the Light.

On another note, when we get San’layn, I want a Paladin version of them as well. Having their ‘Vampiric Wings’ activate during Avenging Wrath would be a rather interesting thing to see as well.

Your argument about Zandalari Paladins being lore-breaking doesn’t hold water at all, considering Ra’wani Kanae explicitly mentions the use of the Light during her boss encounter. We’ve known for months that Zandalari Paladins do, in fact, utilize the Light, albeit through their Loa as conduits.

Void Elf Paladins would be the first Paladin/race combo that would actually be lore-breaking. Paladins utilize the Light. Void Elves don’t. Simple as that.

Zandalari prelates still draw power from the Light, albeit “filtered” through their worship of the loa.

The void elves are infused with a power that is the antithesis of the Light. The two have completely different effects and focuses.

The void and light are one and the same, just two sides of the same coin.

Still, I’d prefer it if a new, void focused class would be added instead of current classes having their themes and aesthetics diluted.

I think it would be cool to have Void “Paladins”. Basically give Void Elves Paladins as a class, but change it so that they aren’t drawing from the Light, but instead the Void. Blizzard could change the name and color of their abilities, but in gameplay they are just the Paladin class.

Light and void definitely aren’t the same. Light is essentially existence/substance, while void is nothingness. Much like matter and antimatter, the two annihilate upon coming into contact. We can observe this in Fel, which is the destructive force left behind after light and void have destroyed one another.

If you have trolls drawing the light from a nature based Loa, than why would it be a stretch to have void elf paladins. It’s obvious that the lore no longer matters and when it gets in the way it’s recanted.

Blizz logic:

I draw from the light, Im a paladin.

I draw from the Sun, Im a paldin!

I draw from a Loa, Im a paladin!

I draw from …, Im a paldin too!

So, we have undead and void elf holy priests. Is paladins much more of a stretch? Add in light forged shadow priests, as well. I’m kind of at the point where racial class restrictions don’t make sense anymore.

The concept of Paladin is basically an adherent of a power, that is martially trained, and draws their energy from a strict set of principles and beliefs, that that power then lends them their strength from.

Even an Anti-Paladin still answers to someone, they follow a ‘code’, even if it is significantly less virtuous than their counterparts, in fact most are even former Paladins.

So what would have happened had a Blood Elf Paladin, been corrupted by the Void? Most certainly they wouldn’t have stopped using their Martial Training or knowledge, and the fact that they’re wielding the Void instead of the Light is merely a different medium.

The Void CAN heal, i.e. Shadowmend, and based on the Lore within the game, that is well established by any knowledgeable player on the subject, the Light and Void are interchangeable, that the Naaru are also the Void Gods, and that they may swap between states.

Even the Ashbringer is an exemplar of this, that it was initially a Void Artifact, but later became to be one of Light, then is infused by the Paladin Leader (and the Death Knights that owed a debt to said Paladin Order) to bear both the power of the Light and Darkness (‘Corrupted’ Ashbringer, V2, the hidden Artifact Appearance).

Not really a stretch to say that Void Elves could be Paladins too, slap on some ‘Void’ effects, you don’t even need to change the name of the effects (though it might be a little odd; i.e. Flash of Light instead being a Flash of Void in appearance; not really an issue though).

If Undead can be Priests, Zandalari and Tauren Paladins, Night Elf Mages, then why not a Void Elf Paladin? Night Elves BANISHED the High Elves for the invasion of Azeroth, due to the usage of Arcane Magic. So now the Night Elves are fine with using Arcane Magic? Undead are supposed to be destroyed or severely affected when Holy Energy courses through them, but they can be Priests? Tauren most of all, were not initially Paladins, and a big excuse for old races not getting new classes, is that “that all happened in the past”. Well, Taurens can’t suddenly become Paladins, anymore than a Human could become a Druid, unless they can, and if so, don’t use silly arguments Blizzard.

Undead holy priests are exceedingly rare. Void elf holy priests don’t exist in lore. Lightforged Shadow Priests don’t exist in lore.

The concept of a Paladin is basically a melee fighter that utilizes the Light.

They would no longer be a Paladin.

By that logic, Druids are Paladins because Nature magic can heal.

Most Undead Priests are Shadow, and those that are Disc/Holy nearly kill themselves every time they use Holy magic. Zandalari and Tauren Paladins both use the Light. Tyrande reconciled with Highborne Mages in Cataclysm. Night Elf Mages are Highborne Mages.

Sorry, but this is just dumb. They exist in game, which is all that matters. We aren’t talking about a book, we’re talking about WoW, the game.

They only exist in-game because lore allows for it. Lore completely allows for Undead Shadow Priests and only barely for Disc/Holy. Lore completely allows for Lightforged Draenei Holy Priests, not for Shadow and likely not even Disc. Lore does not allow for Void Elf Paladins in any sense.

Void Elf lore directly states that the light is quite dangerous to them. Rather than merely causing searing pain, as in the case of the select few undead that are still capable of drawing upon the light, it is known to cause grievous bodily harm. I.e. a void elf trying to use the light would in all likelihood kill itself.

Yet, we have void elf holy priests in game.

I’m pretty sure this is just for gameplay. Blizzard can’t restrict certain specs from races, they can only restrict a class as a whole. So technically any Void Elf priests are all Shadow Priests in lore, the same thing for Worgen. They can’t be paladins, but they can be priests because they can’t use the Light supposedly so all Worgen priests are technically Shadow Priests but for gameplay they allow them to be all 3 specs.

Next you’ll be telling me that by worshiping a now-dead T-Rex that you’ll be able to attain the powers of the Light.

When Mechagnomes have a Druidic form, all mecha-based, people are going to be quite mad. And won’t be complaining about my idea of Void Elf Paladins on the forums. Especially when a lot of WoW Classes are based off of D&D, and there’s such a thing as an Anti-Paladin (or an Unholy Death Knight perchance) that exists in game.

Demon Hunters are essentially Demonic Knights, seeing as their ritual to become one involves single-handedly slaying a Demon, consuming its heart, gouging out your own eyes so that you may see with the Fel Energy instead, etc.

All a Paladin is, is a character that channels an energy source, in this case the Light, into specifically trained Martial Maneuvers and practiced Spells to Mend Wounds. That is the trope of the Class, and there’s no significant difference between a Paladin and an Unholy Death Knight, except for the Power that they currently wield.

The entire point of this, is that they could easily add flavor to the Class, without changing mechanics, and that alone would retain lore sufficiently.

Though my points regarding Female Night Elf Druids, Male Night Elf Priests, or Night Elf Mages is retained, that none of these follow the established lore, and that they all exist in countenance against it. That only a handful of Blood Elves survived to become Demon Hunters, is likewise ignored lore-wise.

I mean, if we really want to go into the inconsistencies of the lore, we could bring up the subject that the Alliance and the Horde have both had War Machines for many years now, tanks even, and yet never actually utilize them in any meaningful conflict. That the level of technological advancement within the society would have eliminated the common guard, utilizing swords and shields, in favor of gunpowder, as it was far quicker, and cheaper, to outfit entire units with guns, then it would be to train them the years it takes to become an effective swordsman. Especially when they tend to go through a lot of them, none are particularly trained in even basic magic, and therefore would be completely vulnerable to anything and everything that would go against them in the field of battle.

Depends exactly how far you want to go with the lore inconsistencies, but I’m not really seeing that much of an issue with a Void Elf Paladin that has purple void wings instead of Angelic ones, and whose effects are darker and more void-y. Especially when it is already well established in said Lore that the Light and Void operate on the same spectrum, that one can easily slide between one or the other. That Ashbringer was forged through the changing of a Void-artifact to that of Light, and then back again, then to Light, then to Dark and Light a final time before being ‘destroyed’ at the end of Legion.

The Naaru are embodiments of the Light, and tend to have a rather profound alter-ego when they go from bright and shiny to dark and gloomy. Yet they can also revert from this state, from light to void to light again, as was seen in quite a few old instances that are canon.

As was already said, they don’t exist at all in lore. Lorewise a void elf priest would be exclusively Shadow, but Blizz isn’t just going to restrict a void elf priest player from speccing Disc or Holy. Doesn’t change the fact that story-wise a void elf holy priest doesn’t exist.
