Voice Chat Required?

I for one have a high disregard to using voice chat. It’s usually only a few voices of which are usually friends and it takes away attention that I could be using more productively in between pulls since I’m having to listen for my role/assignment.

Usually voice chat isn’t required for content that can be easily typed and completed without real time call outs.

Question I have for this, whats the hardest content that could be completed without the use of voice? Most of the early fights have been completed so often that I could do them semi conscious, but as for harder stuff like AQ40 and Naxx, could these be done w/o voice? Would a group NEED to have this in order to complete or could some well prepared people live without it?

Voice chat isn’t necessary if people know what they are doing. It does, however, make things simpler.

Honestly, it depends on the synergy of the group. More talent equates to less need.

I know I’ve completed early Ony/MC/BWL while mostly asleep, but that was after many many runs. My rule of thumb is “on farm” = less need for voice.

I have played with several people that never talked but they did have it set up so they could hear. Depending on your class it still a good idea to be able to get instructions to the raid mid fight and typing them out during a fight is less than ideal.

I would say yes…
I would look at it from the point… you are going to have new players… and other players that never played Vanilla, or P-sever…

So yes for voice… would be something you should go for… or you would end up with yo head being smashed into a wall…

Speaking about raids that is… No one needs voice for 5 mans…that would be dumb

Ya, I’m only concerned about raids. Most the time when I see a group in Retail that requires voice I just never bother. I think I like chat 10x more because you don’t miss things if you have it set up properly. Even when I’m in voice I have to ask about my role because whether or not they said something specific, I’m afraid I missed it.

Are you against just talking or you don’t want to listen either?

I highly recommend for doing raids, to at least have headphones on to listen. Not every raid team does things exactly the same so, by having headphones to listen you can then know what is going on.

Both. I like to either listen to music or watch TV and since 90% of raids is sitting around or clearing trash it seems like theres a lot of empty noise in chats.

People aren’t as extroverted either so there’s hardly banter unless its in chat and people /rolling.

You realize that you can have both music/tv and listen to voice comms, right?

All dungeons, and probably UBRS. Anything from ZG upwards, Voice Chat was a must unless you were willing to wipe a lot.

I had a plugin for Ventrillo that muted (well 90%) all other sound when someone was talking.

Yes, but it’s not very effective. I can wear headphones but then I don’t hear anyone around me IRL. I can use an open mic and speakers but then the others will be confused by my GF speaking and she’ll be confused by them, or who I’m talking to.

Just put yourself on mute, simple as that.

So don’t wear phones and use PTT.

There is no content that explicitly requires voice chat.
Does it make raiding easier ? yes.
Is it required by the game ? No.
Do most Guilds require it ? Yes.
If you choose not to use it likely you won’t get into the raid groups.

The main problem with Discord (which is almost only used) is if you don’t speak you get sent to AFK. I never speak because I don’t need to usually as a DPS or healer.

Thus I find myself in the AFK channel when I am trying to speak, or I notice its eerily quite and I check to see I’m by myself.

TBH if this was an easy fix that didn’t require the Admin to change rules, I would be okay sitting in chats. The whole going AFK during fights is very very annoying. Easily the biggest reason why I avoid voice comm requirements.

Excuse the double negative - There’s no reason not to be in vent or disc or teamspeak or whatever during raids IMO regardless the idiots chatting nonsense during trash pulls and what not. You’re choosing to raid and really it’s respectful to be in there for the duration of the raid. Tons of other stuff you can do in the game where you can avoid voice chat.

I never find myself in AFK and I rarely talk, it must be the settings of the discord you’re in, you could ask them to change it as well

Requires the admin to have it set to no AFKs. This would be required by all the groups I join to ask them to do this.

This is why I just don’t join those groups. It’s not fair to them to not be the only one w/o it and the cool thing is, I don’t have to go to their group if its required.

Look, you need to take this up with whatever guild you’re interested in joining.

It sounds to me like you’re one of those “I’ve got my mind made up. See? I have an answer for everything!” kind of people but there are probably some RLs out there who will be OK with you not using voice comms. I think it might be really rough for you past a certain point, though.

Yes, it would, because voice chat is used widely and almost always during these types of things, you’re the one who’s making the choice to raid but not want to be in voice chat (which is cool, to each their own), you will need to be the one to make the request each and every time then.

Ah well there you go, you should be all set then if you can find those types of groups where it’s not required
