Hi there was roaming around Oribos when all of a sudden my external monitor shut off and my laptop crashed and I rebooted and it simply wasn’t working anymore. (The laptop works fine, but crashes out with that error whenever I try to put on the external monitor)
I have pretty much done all the software troubleshooting possible from a DDU fresh install removing the the drivers. It’s an MSI gaming laptop with a geforce 1060 in it.
Pretty sure it’s hardware now since without fail anytime I try to plug in the monitor via HDMI or mini display port (tried both) it will crash and give me the above error.
Just wanted to post it on here if anyone would have other things I can try and if not what would be involved in terms of fixing whatever video issue inside the laptop is going on.
Thanks
if it’s wow related, I suggest putting this on the Technical Support forums
Hi there. Thanks for this response.
It “happened” while in wow but I am fairly certain this is not a wow specific issue.
Thanks though!
I had an issue years ago where my 980M Nvidia drivers would crash but the vendor’s 980M drivers worked fine. Nvidia support for mobile was pretty bad back then but the laptop vendor was much better.
Give that a try.
Thanks for the advice.
Unfortunately this happen without any drivers at all.
If you have that issue without drivers (ie generic VESA drivers) then it’s possible there’s a hardware issue issues.
If you remove drivers, Windows just adds them back on reboot so just be sure it is using generic drivers 1st.
Thanks.
Seems so weird since I can load into Puppy Linux with zero issues syncing the second monitor.
I have tried everything short of a full reinstall clean but am optimistic on if that is going to make a difference based on everything the circumstances.
Just waiting for some feedback from Nvidia tech support on my memory.dmp file that I sent them so after that will have to decide on that.
Thanks for the response!
If Linux works fine then try to put some strain on the GPU. For example, run a game and see what happens. If it’s still fine then it might a driver issue elsewhere (ie chipset driver etc).
To me it feels more like Windows is probably not being cleaned properly if Linux is completely stable. I remember I used DDU once but still lost 20% perf with my RX580. No matter how many times I ran DDU my Geforce drivers wouldn’t die. I had to wipe Windows clean to get full perf.

Ok will do. Appreciate the tips. Just will be such a pain to wipe but as you have stated it is probably the best logical next course of action. Just hard to imagine it will do much since when it “broke” there was no actual dynamic that was occurring that pointed to a “software” issue.
Take care!
