Video card

hi

i’m experiencing rather significant FPS drops in arena, usually in 3v3 rather than 2v2. my PC specs are as follows:

CPU AMD Ryzen 3600
Motherboard MSi B450 Tomahawk MAX
GPU Radeon RX 580
SSD ADATA SX8200PNP
Memroy 16GB RAM

the outlier is my graphics card, which was given to me second hand as a placeholder. i thought it would be good enough to give me at the very least consistent FPS, but that appears not to be the case.

could anyone please help me with a good value for money gfx card? considering i only play WoW, i can’t warrant spending $600+

appreciate it for any and all replies

Right now is a terrible time to consider upgrading. Miners and scalpers have caused even dirt cheap cards to increase in price.

But, if you can find one, the RTX 3060 JUST came out and MSRPs for $330, if you can find one.

The next step up from RX 580 is GTX 1070 and GTX 1660 super. These are hard sold out at retail due to chip shortage and mining boom. Would probably look 2 tiers up just to not be doing the buying every GPU tier thing, like GTX 1080 and RTX 2060. Ebay probably going to be your only hope. Since you plan to replace your RX 580 soon, maybe try overclocking the mustard out of it to see if you can flatten out the performance and bridge the gap between now and when you can sneak a deal on an upgrade.

$600 won’t even get you a mid range video card due to the shortage.

RX580 should handle Arena perfectly fine, assuming you are running in 1080p. What fps are you getting in arenas? Do you mind sharing your settings? Also another possibility you might consider is the addons, they will often give you the illusion that your GPU is slow while it’s your CPU that’s bottlenecking your performance. If you have an excessive amount of addons you will eventually reach a brick wall regarding how much information your CPU can relay to your GPU.

I took a year to plan out my PC. Just for the love of WoW.

i might try this during the interim. :+1:

running 1080p, and the FPS varies between 150 to 300 depending on the map. settings currently are on the lowest possible, with spell density (changed to essential) and particle density (fair) being the only changes. as i only play arena, my addons are limited to: bigdebuffs, classicnumbers, leatrix, omnibar, movable holy power bar, sarena, sortgroup, weakauras (note: i have maybe 6 basic icon weak auras which aren’t very impactful on performance, or at least i’d imagine they’re not).

the FPS becomes an issue when combat starts, typically with more than 3 players on my screen spamming abilities, especially shamans and/or pet classes - or even just heavy spell-effect specs. this is made much worse when coupled with newer arena maps. FPS will drop from 150-300, to 100, to 20-30.

we should all aspire to this.

ty for replies guys. i really appreciate it

Thnx! It’s been a long time so I’m happy to have it done.

I think it might really be an addon issue to be honest, if you have something that isn’t coded properly it will for certain run your CPU down. Have you tried disabling the addons and trying arena?

I thought this might be the case, when I saw my video card, gtx 1660 super, which I bought for about 260.00 dollars, selling for 400.00 dollars plus on Amazon.
It’s not like it got better, right?
