Viasat or heaven help me Hugesnet?

Not really sure which forum this should go in, so adding here, move if need be
I’m moving YAY, unfortunately I have high speed with cox now, and they are not in the area i’m moving to. Neither is verizon internet.

So, my choices appear to be Viasat or Hughesnet.

if you have either one, how is game play?

that is the only thing i’m NOT looking forward to with moving.

thanks in advance. (neither is cheap :frowning: but that’s a price i gotta pay)

If there’s decent 4G you might look into something like unlimitedtogo. It’s what I did because satellite blows.
Previously had a wifi service but switched to another that fell through and tried going back and got the run around about not being able to get a signal anymore.

Connectall dot org is another you can look into, they’ve got a sprint hotspot and says it can sometimes be available to areas with crap service.

Currently eagerly awaiting the electric co-op that’s running fiber to their customers/places no one else wanted to service.

i do have verizon unlimited for my cell service with 4g, but there are no live agents on right now that can answer any of my questions apparently, since i’m getting the digital runaround with their chat system lol. Is it possible i can use that for my hotspot? they don’t have residential up there yet, hoping my cell gets a good connection.

I’ll check on the ones you listed though, thanks.

i did check on hughesnet, i have been stuck with them before and they totally stink, and saw that if you go over the gb you have, they put you at reduced speeds of 1-3 mbps. WHAT? that’s like slower than dial up…can i vote for dial up instead?? LOL

Well I’d previously canceled my Wifi service for a 3rd party Verizon service. It was great for a couple months then they decided to no longer fulfill any of the contracts, we were told we could get the same plan through Verizon, but that wasn’t true at all. It was “unlimited” you’d hit 10 gb data used and it’d throttle to 3g for the rest of the month and that’s nearly unusable. I’ll avoid them from now on if I can.

I switched to the unlimitedtogo and have the blue? plan…whatever ATT is. Had it for over a year. Pricey, but it works. Lately it’s been kinda so-so, you learn to make do, but it doesn’t throttle down like the Verizon did, it’s actually unlimited, but it can during high traffic. I’m a night owl so works fine.

I’ve also got a second hotspot through the connectall, it’s a sprint service one, and lately, I’ve been using that one more.

As for the verizon unlimited…I’d see if it truly is, or if it’s the cell company BS where they make it nearly useless when you hit the data allowance.

It’s pretty sad that cell companies are allowed to screw around customers the way they do.

I’m sure the technology has improved some, but I’d be very wary of getting internet from satalite. Especially if the weather is often cloudy. In the past satalite internets speed was dependent on the weather (Among other factors).

well, my verizon shows i used 27.64 g last month on the cell phone, i tend to watch a lot of youtube on the phone when i’m in bed, usually falling asleep with it running no less. No change in how anything plays or the internet or anything.

I have not tried to hook my desktop up to the hotspot wifi stuff here, since honestly, i don’t know how, to test it, but i don’t know if they have the same coverage up there where i’m going, which is apparenly by google maps, in the middle of woods :frowning:
trying to find that info out now.

either way, i gotta get out of the hellhole i’m in now, and where i’m going is a far nicer place complete with higher rent and looks like higher internet by a lot.

sigh.

added since i can’t add another reply …in response to hellasha…

i hate that i can’t reply twice in a row without someone else saying something…but yeah the hughesnet is a hughmess i’ve been stuck with them before, here is a link to a ss I took of a speed test back when i had them lol. It took an hour to complete, and i was shocked it actually did. obviously you gotta remove the spaces.

I think there is something that comes into effect that when it’s the phone doing it, you’ll notice no difference, but if it’s a hotspot, then it throttles it down like crazy. I know that was what happened to me, I think I’d read stuff saying phones got better treatment.
Not sure how it might work if you’re using the phone itself as a hotspot. Mine was a separate hotspot device the sim card went in.

I hooked up a neighbors router once when they were on hughesnet or a similar internet service and the latency was like 700ms or so. It was pretty bad.
The image…those are speeds like I’d get after I used that initial 10gb of data on the Verizon plan I had. Although I doubt upload was that high.

Latency is gonna be terrible, dialup is probably better for latency than satellite.

oh well, gotta do what i gotta do…

I can stay here where i’ve been renting a room for over five years and where i have high speed internet and some fairly new renters with serious drug/alcohol issues complete with cops being called, generally by me, but the other night three people here called them at same time (they did take one guy to jail and while they were interviewing him, he actually sent one of the guys here a text to say when he gets out, he’s coming back to kill him and rape one of the girls- IN FRONT of the cops!)

or

move to a converted garage into 1 bdrm apt with who knows what crappy internet i end up with and higher rent.

since i’m a double amputee in a wheelchair, i can’t defend myself like i used to be able to do, and not a gun owner so that is out not to mention my idiot governor in this state and his gun control bs (virginia), and i kind of like living and not relying on some drug (wouldn’t take the word) loaded drunk to remember i’m not involved in their garbage.

so far the only two con’s on the list is the net and higher rent lol. and that is something i’m willing to give up for peace of mind and peace of location.

hopefully i’ll still be able to play without a horrendous amount of trouble.

Yep. The couple second travel time the signal is going to have is going to make latency a big issue.

i usually run solo or with one person, and dont do dungeons or raids, and guess i can live without bgs since i only just started them (but was looking forward to those dang it).

i might just have to die more often lol.

neither one will be playable, at all. you will have at a minimum 2000 milliseconds, or two full seconds of ping/latency on a good day. you won’t have service when the weather is bad and it gets too cloudy, no matter what the sales rep tries to tell you.

you will literally be better off with dialup. i would advise going with a mobile/cellular hotspot with a company that offers unlimited data through it.

your next best option depending on terrain is look into mounting a point-to-point relay with microwave dishes at your place and another place that does have internet access. you’ll still have an extra 40-80ms of extra ping, but it would be playable.

edit: unless you’re moving out to the boonies, you might be able to get DSL through the telephone landline provider. ATT still offers it, as do centurylink and several others. it’s not cable internet speeds, but the latency is about the same. it’s what i use since i live outside the city limits and can’t get cable.

I fit the boonies unfortunately, already checked on those. I knew the cable wasn’t out there, but had hope the phone was, notta.

I’m looking into the hot spot stuff, i do have cell phone with verizon with 4g, but until i can actually talk to a live person I am clueless on that one.

just found out i can upgrade my computer to win10 free still, so trying to find my key now lol. Gotta get all this stuff done that can possibly be done before i move, which i’m HOPING will be in a couple weeks. They are still working on the place to make it accessible for me.

thanks for all the responses, much appreciate them!

i’m not sure how well verizon’s mobile network handles gaming. i know that AT&T’s “mifi” hotspot doohickey does it quite well. i used to get my internet by piggybacking off a wifi repeater at the other end of my yard, picking up my neighbor’s mobile hotspot node, to game and stream netflix/hulu. i paid half the bill of course. there wasn’t anything else available at the time. in my case, ping was okay 90% of the time, but certain times of day i’d lose signal when a truck would go down the road and break line-of-sight between my repeater and my neighbor’s house.

if i could game on that, you should be able to game on a mobile connection, assuming the provider has unlimited plans or plans with high enough data caps

hopefully it will work, i’ve been with verizon so long i don’t remember ever being with anyone else to be honest. never had any issues with them at all.

unlimited data and i get the +55 discount to boot lol.

ok, found my windows key, guess i need to get this thing updated to win 10, if it works, i’ll be back, if it don’t, i have a big dang pile of junk. have it half upgraded with new parts, was about to upgrade the rest, so hopefully it works lol.

have a great day all.

I play on satellite almost exclusively. Average of 780ms latency. Exede is decent in our area, other spots may vary with traffic loads.

You can pretty much say bye to melee dps competitively. Healing is more than doable on the other hand.

I spam battlegrounds and am often the best healer there. For pve I’m a casual 10 key’er for the weekly chest, and I heal just fine there too, even carrying a bad dps or tank sometimes.

In short it’s doable, but it’s a very huge difference that will take awhile to get used to.

If Starlink ever goes live, that’ll be a better option latency-wise since the signal doesn’t have as far to go.

oooo i’m so happy lol, just got off chat with verizonwireless, I love those guys lol, they have always come through for me with pretty much anything I’ve needed.

There is 4G lte where i’m going, and I can run the computer off the phone’s hotspot OR off a jetpack which she recommended when i mentioned gaming, she apparently plays as well, and that is how she gets her connection no less…(doesn’t pretty much everyone know about or play this game after all?). She said she gets a bit bogged down in dungeons, other wise plays without issue.

so instead of looking at possibly $100-150 a month for some services I only have to pay 20 a month for the jetpack and a one time cost of either 199 (w/o contract) or 99 with contract.

and, best of all, no hard caps…I thought i saw something about a preferred customer in the chat but missed getting the chat mailed to me before i hit exit (wasn’t thinking), so not sure if that is why there is no hard cap or just my ability to get anything added to my account that i want since i’ve been with them forever so my credit with them is awesome. (new phone, no problem, new line, no problem, new anything, no problem, bought 3 samsung S9’s two years ago, no problem - does add up though lol)

And I do mean forever, I had verizon for phone long before wireless was a thing…I don’t remember ever having another phone company to be honest.

AND…I am now on windows10, and other than playing on a glorified phone, everything i had on here, seems to still be here. Junk and all lol. I almost wish i’d done a complete reset, but oh well.

anyway, thanks for the help and appreciate the comments!! Ya’all have a great day!!
