Title says it all. Why now do we get crappy veteran gear now for the time walking reward?? Was champion last expansion?!
You’re getting weekly champion gear from the event, the box from the 5 TW quest is a part of that.
It was heroic loot during the 6 week timewalking event only.
Outside of that it’s normal mode loot from the 5x time walking quest and heroic mode loot from the raid quest if there is a raid during that expansion’s timewalking week.
Timewalking event still gives champion gear for the 5 TW dungeons / 5 TW raid bosses. Just for classic TW due to the event this is also shared with other weeklies. Such as the weekly to kill Dagran I in the BRD raid and doing the 3 world bosses in Taranis. Meaning if you did one of those already, the others will give veteran gear. It even says so on the tooltip of the box you get from the weeklies.
Normally the raid weekly would give a hero track piece but since you can do BRD raid on LFR, that is probably why it is champion or veteran depending on when you did it during the week.
Honestly it’s fantastic for alts.

I don’t get why they never took timewalking seriously. They had one of the most unique systems in the game to expand on, that lots of people like…and now they just turned it into an alt leveling simulator - with no rewards for mains. They haven’t even added a new Timerunning mount (outside of infinite timereaver), and it’s been years.
I guess there’s not much use farming legacy items anymore - unless it’s for transmog. great work blizz… like really good decision to change timewalking there!
you guys give up on great ideas way too quickly. 
No , the reward after the 5 time walkers was champion. The chest I opened today was only Veteran track.
SAME HERE. i never would have done it if it was only for veteran gear because it was just for an alt.
it even says it in the friggin quest when you pick it up.
total BS. waste of time.
