Yet an other change that was one of the biggest system for hunters and turned into an abandoned project. Thanks Blizzard for making me waste days for pets like Loque’nahak in Sholazar Basin TWICE cause you decided to abandon that.

The Essence Swapper is not an abandoned project. It was implemented specifically for Hati as our artifact weapon perk for BM hunters, as there was no other way for players to get their second pet to suit individual player preferences. In Legion, you were forced to play with Hati as BM, the Essence Swapper was just a way for players to have some choice of appearance. Today, you have the choice to pick whatever pet/appearance you want for that second pet, it just requires that you’ve tamed the beast in question.
The intent was never for that item to work with anything other than the actual interactions it had with our artifact.
Having said that, what they could’ve done was something similar to what we’ve had with Soulshape for the Night Fae covenant, where players could manually select an energy based animal form(due to Hati being a physical manifestation of energy). It would definitely have been the better option, though would also have required a lot more dev time to implement.
