My computer over the last year or so had been Power Blipping on me, mainly when playing WoW. Although it happened once when I was playing Sims.
Anywho I had deduced it my computer was Power Blipping, due to only having purchased a 550w unit.
So after it shutting me out in a Random Leveling BG. I went and got a 850w unit. Now even programs to used to used to run High to Very High, like Google Chrome. Are running at low.
However, World of Warcraft is still running at Very High.
Any advice on this front?
Specifically:
Power Usage ~ Very High
Power Usage Trend ~ Low to sometimes Moderate.
The Trend used to also be High to Very High before upgrading my PSU.
The logs that I’d get are just ones like DNS/DHCP checks sometimes fail, but when it does it’s reboot cycle, the only critical or bad log is the one for Kernal Power.
From what I could tell based on online searches, and my own personal attempts at fixes, it had to do with my PSU not supplying enough power to suit my computer (I do have a lot of things plugged into the USB slots as well, which likely didn’t help matters).
I had just recently built the PC in 2020, and it didn’t start doing random restarts until this year.
Since I’ve changed the PSU, nothing thankfully has happened, and honestly my computer’s images seem more Crisp. I also wonder if part of the issue was my old PSU had an ECO Boost/limiter switch on it.
But when I noticed WoW still had a high power usage, I was nervous about it happening again in the near future.
I’ve not ran a stress test yet, but from what I can tell everything on the Thermal Side is running in excellent condition.
Have you changed your Power Plan to Ultimate so the CPU can scale quickly and aggressively. Some times you need to use a CMD command to get it to show. It’s mainly for stabilizing overclocks.
Another thing to consider is the outlet that your computer is plugged into. There may be something happening just enough to cause your computer to reboot.
Example being that I had a mini fridge plugged in in the living room - made it nice and convenient for grabbing a beverage while watching TV, a movie, or playing on the Xbox. After a while, if I had the TV on and the compressor for the mini fridge kicked in, it would cause the screen to go blank for a few seconds, and then would come back. Something similar may be happening with your computer. Using a power strip to plug the mini fridge into an outlet on a different circuit solved that problem for me.
If plugging into an outlet on a different circuit isn’t an option for you, a UPS might help. But they tend to not be the cheapest things in the world, and then you have to worry about battery maintenance and eventual replacements.
Since you’ve already tried a different power supply, and a much more powerful one at that, I’d tend to lean away from that. Unless your GPU is pulling some absolutely insane transient power spikes. Even with a ton of stuff plugged into your USB ports, a 300w increase on the power supply should more than remedy any issues related to the power supply (unless it’s a cheapie, off-brand one, but that’s a different tangent for a different day).
