What’s the point of having Venthyr as an option if its ability is practically useless?
Compared to the other three covenant abilities, Venthyr brings nothing to the table. The mass curse is niche at best, and the lack of raw damage attached to it makes it a DPS loss to even cast. Even with its recent damage buff, it’s still far outclassed by its competitors.
In other words, if you don’t do your research beforehand, you’re punished for going with your favorite covenant.
I’d hope for a later patch to fix this, but I’ve already established myself as a Necrolord, and would rather not go through the process of switching covenants and grinding renown to finally be able to join the one I prefer.
I think the devs hate Venthyr. Venthyr is trash tier for nearly every class spec in the entire game.
All the development resources and love went into Night Fae and Kyrian.
yea definitely a lot of classes have certain niches that only one gives them so they have to go to that covenant or else they could underperform which is poopy casue i think venthyr as a thing is really cool i love the gothic/renaissance stuff
gestures to the mog
Always go for the mog
How is renown a grind? I hit 60 on my Rogue and it took me a week to get 29 with 0 effort. I did I think one M0 and all 4 LFR with a bit of the covenant questing thrown in.
S-tier for DPS warriors. Technical BiS for Havoc DH ST.
I’m pretty sure most shamans are Venthyr.
Mindgames is pretty much amazing for disc and shadow both, I dunno why you think generalizing a covenant based on your ONE example of it being poor for your class means it isn’t good. But, sadly, this is the mentality of all the middle aged try hards that populate this community.
I went venthyr warlock for one reason… That two-handed sword for my pets to wield.
Your experience is different than a lot of people’s. Mine isn’t going terribly slow, but it’s a bit hit or miss. I’m “leveling” renown with someone else…we’ve both been doing the exact same things (dungeons, quests, etc) and they’re behind me by 3 or 4 renown because what has counted for me hasn’t always counted for them. We’ve also been waiting to turn our weeklies in so we don’t get “locked” behind them, yet we often don’t get renown for things. I see a lot of people with the same issue, yet many others saying it was quick and easy for them.
I use it a lot as aff. It’s not for the upfront damage from the explosion, but the extra dot for Rapture or maybe Rapid Contagion in pvp. It get’s really fun in torghast, imo.
Not choosing Venthyr broke my Goblin Warlock heart. Truly. I hope the existing buff is just the start. I would gladly put in the effort to switch, all things being equal.
If you didn’t do your research that means you’re not pushing high content. Stop torturing yourself and enjoy your choice, any class with any covenant can complete KSM or Heroic Nathria.
I’ve got a Night Fae DK alt and I’m ok with being sub-optimal, sometimes you want to play this game just for fun (crazy talk, I know).
I went Venthyr with my Warlock, and I was OK with having lackluster Covenant abilities for a while. Almost never used them unless I was doing Torghast and they were buffed to hell. But I swapped to Kyrian. The Phial is like a speed boost in the vein of a HS or Mortal Coil as I speed around the place with Burning Rush, since they prolong the time I can use it. And combined with the Imp’s Magic Purge, I can cleanse myself of nearly all debuffs. I use it very often. And the Scouring Tithe lands on mobs ASAP. It doesn’t have a slow approach that can be screwed up if the tank changes position.
The Steward Phial and the Scouring Tithe are actually things I weave into my game play almost on CD, while Door of Shadows and Impending Catastrophe almost never were used.
I really loved questing with The Accuser and General Draven. But denying myself useful abilities seemed silly after a while. I am just a casual, but even we like to have useful abilities instead of abilities we never use.
I have stuck stubbornly to the covenant because I truly do love the aesthetic. It’s a shame they think the minor damage increase will do anything at all. It almost needs a whole new rework to be viable.
I’d say, making it instant cast dot that ramps up damage until it explodes blood, saturating the area with curses and aoe damage. The benefit would be that even if it’s a single target it would at least be better than only using it in situations where there are multiple adds, but would still be beneficial if there were.
Just my idea though, I’m sure they’ll just buff it once and forget about it.
Mindgames only good if you pvp or raid as shadow.
Because most of the covenants are close together for shadow. Nightfae is actually best because it covers up one of shadow priests biggest weaknesses. Mobility.
Door of shadows and body and soul is all the mobility you need. Mindgames is also frequently available in PvE and has very many good uses, like during tank busters boss casts, aoe trash mobs, and other uses. It provides very strong utility, just requires some brains on when to use wisely, not just a rotation filler. Not to mention when used properly it’s a free devouring plague essentially with the insanity generation.
Also, mindgames is ridiculous as disc, radiance into mindgames + penance is basically a free group top off on a 50 sec cooldown.
My lock is Venthyr. Picked them cause I liked the xmog. About the only time I ever use the ability is on big trash pulls to curse everything. I’m fine with it being lackluster because I’m a filthy casual and picked the covenant that I wanted not what was best.
Necrolords and Venthyr are definitely solid for some class specs. There are way too many instances of Night Fae and Kyrian blowing Venthyr and Necrolord out of the water, though.
Literally the majority of players in the game are Night Fae and Kyrian. Venthyr and Necrolord need help for many class specs, especially Venthyr Warlocks where Venthyr is literal trash tier because they screwed up the Venthyr Warlock class ability.
It really looks like Venthyr and Necrolord tuning wasn’t finished in time for Shadowlands’ launch. Hopefully they fix this issue soon.
Venthyr received several nerfs near the end of beta, and NL received a couple class ability nerfs(but Fleshcraft has always been awful).
Was Kyrian but went Fea on my dest lock and it’s a better choice but working renown up is a pita as I got to 9 and it doesn’t really tell you wear to go quest wise. Only a suggestion from the winter queen was a hint at what to do and having to read on wowhead to do various things to get gain renown…
Nothing like when I doing Venthyr on my pally were the quests were constant and obvious were to go next and the renown gain was obvious as well.
