Vengence DH Help

Hello everyone,

I’m looking at potentially playing DH in dragon flight. And I’m wondering if any notable DH’s have put out guides for dragon flight. I’m looking for specific information like the best opener for an m+ pull, how to deal with <4 souls but capped fury, and nuanced information of that nature – or just a general overview of best practices so then I can post about the nuanced questions after gaining some experience.

Right now I’m just waiting for Tactyks’ Dh video since he started putting them out but hasn’t done DH yet. But I’d like to start practicing while leveling if possible.

Because talents and everything are still being adjusted I don’t believe there has much as far as an “official” guide to gameplay that’s come out yet. The DH discord would be a good place for this question though.

Almost to level 60 on the dh and I find spirit bomb feels really clunky.

Some times I’m capped for fury with <4 souls so I can either fracture and over cap fury but then pop a spirit bomb or spam soul cleave. And I’m not sure what I should do?

I could not take spirit bomb but that seems to do far less aoe damage but foxes the clunkyness.

Dragon flight seems to ‘buff’ the no spirit bomb build because of all the soul cleave talents and giving soul cleave frailty.

Don’t be shy about casting Spirit Bomb when you’re close to Fury capping. As a rule of thumb you want to clear out your Soul Fragments with a Spirit Bomb and then spam Soul Cleave. If you clear out your Fury before you start building again you should never cap before you reach 5 Soul Fragments.

It’s been a shortfall of Vengeance as a tank that we don’t have more effective tanking abilities to spend our resources on, but the stacking Frailty talent at the end of Vengeance seems like it will be essential in nearly all situations just for giving our Soul Cleave casts some effective value.

But doesn’t spirit bomb do less damage than soul cleave unless you have 4 or 5 souls out?

It’s about equal damage at two soul fragments, more at three or more. It’s just about keeping in the habit of weaving Soul Cleaves into your rotation so your damage profile fills out and you don’t cap on resources. Everything that can contribute to more casts/damage gets put into it. If you’re able to build Soul Frags quicker and spend into Spirit Bomb casts then that’s what you should be doing i.e. big AoE situations with 4p proc + Fallout.

Might you have the link for DH discord?

Far from an expert, but i’ve been a fan of the spec since release, have done some highish keys on it and mythic prog. Not always my main but usually an alt.

Seems like you have a grasp of how the spec works, but to further elaborate on some of your points because im a nerd;

•TO EARLY TO HAVE A DEFAULT META BUILD: Obviously, tuning is afoot on beta and could drastically change things. That said, the current AoE and ST builds while similiar on the tree, play quite differently.

•AOE / M+ BUILD IS THE SAME OLD SPIRIT BOMBING: It is so clunky. Wish it cost less fury, capped at 3 and was just a replacement for Soul Cleave (and MOST improrantly of all, get rid of that clunky delay). Alas, it remains as is.

Right now, Bomb > Cleave even at two targets. One thing that helps me (shouldnt be the case because its counter intuitive) is to shift my mindset to how VDH used to when im AoEing IE: Soul Fragments are our resource and Fury is an afterthought, existed just to fill in gaps where we can’t generate Fragments or Bomb.

Essentially, a simplified 2+ target priority:

1: SPIRIT BOMB at 4+ soul fragments, 3 is okay if you accidentally eat onem

2: FRACTURE and IMMOLATION AURA to gen shards, Immo taking prio if you’re in a big AoE, Fracture if its just 2-3 target cleave.

3: Dump Fury into SOUL CLEAVE. Key here is to only really care about Fury and Cleave IF THE PREVIOUS PRIORITES ARE NOT AVAILABLE. (If your at one charge of Fracture and not about to cap at 2, thats essentially your Cleave window).

•SINGLE TARGET (MOSTLY CARES) ABOUT FURY WITH FRAGMENTS TAKING A BACKSEAT: As i’m sure you’re aware, Frailty is extremely strong now, and SC deals extra damage the main target. Simply put, keep Fracture and Immo on CD, press Soul Cleave to avoid capping. Don’t want to waste Fury.

The only time Fragments really matter in ST is during FIERY BRAND due to the extra fire damage taken. At that point, you swap to the Spirit Bomb priority system, and go back to the Cleave priority when Brand falls off.

When it comes to heavy hitters like FEL DEVASTATION, you mostly want to press on CD. If you can stack a few Frailtys right as it comes off CD, thats great, but dont delay pressing Fel Dev for more then a couple seconds.

•DEMON SPIKES IS REALLY POWERFUL: Feed the Demon, extended uptime…Spikes is up way more. And its so nice. Additionally, VDH is just super bulky atm even without a defensive up, so its a good idea to keep one charge always rolling, and save the other for emergencies or big pulls + high damage boss phases. Never keep both on CD though!

All in all, it does sound like you get the gist of VDH. Be ready for change since its prepatch ( #UncapSoulCleave ) but its unlikely it will end up playing drastically different.
