The Huojin vs. Tushui dichotomy is actually extremely fascinating when you look into it. The Pandaren schism offers something to the factions that hasn’t been explored: true ideological differences.
The Tushui are deontological thinkers; they believe what truly matters is what you do directly in the world. That no matter what, nothing is worth forsaking one’s principles.
The Huojin, on the other hand (paw), are consequentialists; they believe the greater good takes precedent. They’re willing to commit the smaller “evils” for a greater outcome.
It is (or could/would have been) a proper opportunity to explore a rift between the Alliance and Horde that isn’t solely focused on racial conflict or past grievances.
And even aside from that, Pandaren have so, so many more factions that are extremely fascinating and diverse.
• The Shado-Pan: An order of secretive warriors dedicated to the defense of Pandaria.
• The Golden Lotus: A group selected by the Celestials themselves to protect the sacred Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
• The Order of the Cloud Serpent: An ancient organization created to fend off the Zandalari by raising and learning to ride mythic sky dragon creatures.
• The Black Market & Jade Lotus (if canon): Underground criminal syndicates that operate throughout Azeroth.
… and so many more.
Pandaren lend so much to the narrative of Azeroth, and could offer so much more if given the proper opportunity. But most just see 'em and go “panda, hurr” and dismiss 'em.
Seriously, give 'em a chance. Read Pandaren lore and try to dismiss your preconceptions. You might be surprised.
I’ll agree that as a neutral race, Pandaren didn’t really capitalize on that brother-against-brother type of storyline that makes for so much Warcraft. I don’t think that it really detracts from Pandaren though.
As far as Void Elf vs. Blood Elf content in the future, I don’t see it happening. The factions are at peace, and players were sick and tired of the faction conflict story by the end of Wrath before they even made it a focus for expansions.
Absolutely agree, the Belf vs. Velf / Helf “conflict” narrative is embarrasing in comparison.
Helves ended up looking like hypocritical parasites -they only regained interest in their former kingdom until after the Belves managed to recover control of the territory, also nice touch how they went up in arms for “muh principles” regarding sucking mana from a critter but getting infested with malicious energy that can turn individuals into vicious killers is apparently A-Ok (remember that cute phrases Alleria hears coming from the Void 24/7 in the “Three sisters” comic? Loved how it´s trying to make her kill her husband)
Velves ended up looking like incoherent irresponsible morons (worst intro lore ever… who literally can believe people that rebelled to their autorithy using the “I´m trying to PROTECT muh kingdom!!” just to switch to the faction literally killing the members of the aforementioned kingdom 5 min after saying this? Better yet, one of their leaders literally validating the aforementioned authority in that very same scenario was peak incoherence, waaay to make the character credibility since his inception).
Belves worst “sin” is following the Horde in their numerous spats againts the Alliance, but they at least haven´t literally waged war against their own people and pretended their actions aren´t a literal contradiction to their words.
In comparison the Pandaren dichotomy is much better indeed… these aren´t people that look like children throwing a tantrum, these look like adults following opposite philosophycal ways of life BUT that like real adults, manage to respect the other individual regardless.
What conflict? No seriously, Belves literally have too much to occupy themselves to get concerned with incoherent individuals whose actions are like a mile from their “words”.
What´s with you Helfers and this OCD need to attach to the Belves like a parasite? No seriously, if people picks them cause “they are the friends of the Humans”, then me thinks their narrative future lays exactly there: getting development in the Alliance, not staying permanently as failed fodder for the Belves.
“At peace” is a bit inaccurate. Technically there is only a very thin ceasefire that has been more than hinted toward being viewed unfavorably by parties in both factions. If anything we could likely come back to see Orgrimmar having been nuked from orbit and Ironforge having been melted down from the inside by rampant elements or an extra-spicy, fire-flavored mana bomb. Granted I don’t think that is where Blizzard or the community wants to see the story go anywhere in the near future.
God YES. The best conflicts are those that happen naturally. If you want to continue the faction war, this is one of the best ways to go about it. Absolutely.
Lor’themar angrily labeled the Void Elves as traitors during siege of lordaeron.
Alleria is eyeing Silvermoon to “reclaim it” for the Alliance. Turalyon also has dialogue in Stormwind contemplating reclaiming past Alliance territories after his victory in stromgarde.
Farstriders are actively ostracized by Silvermoon Magisters & Blood Knights to the point they may be tempted to defect to Alliance to follow their fellow rangers Alleria & Valeera.
Instead of just banning them from the Sunwell, Void Elves are banned from their homeland as a whole.
There are Silvermoon Scholars in Telogrus Rift studying the void, meaning they’re either being recruited into the Alliance or still residing in Silvermoon in secret, which poses the city to the risk of a domestic incident.
There’s lots of cool story threads that could be unraveled here.
I want another Elvish “civil war” more than anything.
High Elves split between both sides because some of the Alliance allied high elves can’t stand void elves, some of the Horde ones leaving because they can’t stand being allied with the Horde.
Light vs Void aesthetics.
Ghostlands turns into another Arathi/Darkshore.
Rommath/Umbric bitter ex styled comedic lines that are also dark as hell.
Lor’themar and Alleria at each other’s throats.
Don’t even care who wins.
The whole setting would be so insane that just the content alone would make it good even for the losing side.
