Back in 2004 The Deadmines was always called VC back in the days of Vanilla. Dire Maul was already a known incoming zone, and its debut was simply right around the corner. We were excited!!
It wasn’t until Cataclysm in 2010 when The Deadmines dungeon would be refurbished and the new birds of wow would call it DM. This was later double downed upon in 2019 with the launching of WoW Classic.
Now, like most things in current times, those who weren’t there, nor want to learn from history, have taken it upon themselves to try and re-write history and say it was always DM.
In Vanilla we called it VC, and VC we call it today.
VC - Deadmines due to Van Cleef as the final boss.
DM - Dire Maul, usually abreviated by DME (east) DMW (west) DMN(North), the 3 respective dungeons in Dire Maul.
in Classic Wow, it was referred to as DM for Deadmines while people were majority in that leveling bracket, but as the playerbase got up, it was switched to VC like the old days.
This topic always separates the true vanilla players from the imposters. It has always been DM since the game released in 2004. I never once saw it called VC during my years of playing back in the day
I called it deadmines in original vanilla. The idea that everybody called it VC is just the streisand effect.
Nobody searches for Dire maul without specifying the wing (N, E, or W) so trying to troll people who say “DM” for deadmines (especially if it’s done in local westfall chat) is always just making anyone who does it look like a moron.
It’s DM. Diremaul is always referred to as which wing you are doing anyway so no confusion there. VC is just one boss, it makes sense to say “VC” if you are doing a quick run without any quests or whatever, but the dungeon is linear so there really is no point to say it like that.
Also, people didn’t start calling it VC until AFTER diremaul was released in 1.3, so it was DM FIRST.
