Just a quick question, as a pugger, most likely I’ll get 1 piece of 252 from m+15 and probably 1 piece of heroic SOD gear. Say I get the same slot (for example chest and I know the SOD has shard socket), would the extra 13 ilvl of 252 be better than the one with 239 with socket?
This is for pve for m+ and heroic raid and mostly tanking.

For M+ I can tell you with certainty that the item level bonus from a 252 trumps the 239.
For heroic raid when tanking with a 3 piece bonus of the same shard type it is likely better to use dom socket pieces (kel/sylvanas drops). Not sure if raidbots has been updated to the latest tuning changes yet but once it is give it a double -check.

I would go Dom Socket just to be safe, but hard to say without sims.
Some of these gems give % damage increase so they’re worth the small item level drop imho.
Especially worth considering if the gems are maxed to tier 5.
Keep the higher item level pieces to bluff your item level tho, obviously.

Things to keep in mind:
- Do you have a set bonus? The shards themselves aren’t much to look at, it’s the set bonuses that make them valuable.
- How long will it be before you have a set bonus?
- Keep in mind that set bonuses only work in the maw (including raid). How much of your playtime is there?
My vault this week had 239 shoulders with a socket. I took the 252 M+ chest with no socket, instead.
Why?
Because I don’t have 3 blood gems, that’s why. And I don’t know how long it will be before I get 3 blood gems. And even after I do get 3 blood gems, the 252 chest will still be better for M+ and other activities.

I don’t. I don’t even have 1 frost gem yet and so far only shoulder and glove (from deaths advance rep) has sockets so I will probably follow your suit tomorrow.
You can kill heroic bosses every week. You can’t get 252 items from M+. Even if it’s on a domination slot, unless you raid mythic, take the 252. Only reason you would take the 239 domination piece is if you will be able to get the set bonus at that moment. Regardless of how bad of an indicator it is, ilvl also contributes to getting invited to groups if you’re pugging.

Shards are better in raid with the 3pc bonus, while the ilvl is superior in M+.
Domination Shards are ALWAYS king in raiding, though.

A rank 5 shard of Cor looks pretty good for M+. While set bonuses don’t work in dungeons, the individual shards retain their effects.

I vote the 252 because it will give more HP and about (1.01)^13 more primary stat than the 239 piece. You can get five other slots with dom sockets. It doesn’t seem like a big rush especially if you don’t have the gem yet.
I don’t know that another 4 dom shard gears would be needed!
Although… maybe rank 5 shard of Bek 
Its said that lfr gear with socket beats mythic gear without socket…

You…might want to look at the shards and their upgraded versions. If you’re not ending up with three damage shards in m+ you’re trolling.
According to Ion and the wow dev team the higher item level will always be better. . . . . . . . Which we all know is complete bs

You’re certainly wrong.
Accretion (Shard of Kyr) slaps incredibly hard for a tank. You will take any almost SoD socket over almost anything in the game if it is the difference between not having Kyr or having Kyr. Kyr is like a Gem that says “+115 Stamina and +210 Leech”.
Except this is wrong.
They don’t add 1000 DPS but they’re definitely very strong. By the end of the season you will see every single player in top keys running Kyr in their gear in addition to DPS/tanks running Bek, Cor, and Dyz.
You made the wrong choice. Mistakes happen.
