The two games are different here, it took me some searching of old video but the expected nature of tab target and targeting activated by proximity of ability mechanics was a very certain and intuitive way back in Vanilla that just so happens to match how I remember it.
Classic WoW on the other hand functions similar but different and notably worse.
What can be done to get my Vanilla targeting back? Are there setting or command line scripts that can be run?
If the behavior is client-side, then I would imagine there should be some scripts or an addon that would allow you to modify the behavior to how you remember. If the behavior is server-side, then I’d question your 15 year old memory.
Modern WoW does have a lot more polish on it. Many interface and QoL improvements have been made.
That being said, we knew this at the beginning when Classic was announced.
On the actual topic of this thread, I’ve had many issues with targeting. I lose my target for no reason, or my toon will simply stop attacking when I switch targets. I do not recall how this worked back in 2006 when I first started playing, but it certainly feels different from Retail.
The bug is that in classic Target Scan Enemy (Hold) doesn’t actually scan it only selects one mob (whichever is closest) and doesn’t cycle through.
The addon was made redundant in 7.2
TAB TARGETING
Tab targeting has been updated to feel more consistent. While in combat, you will no longer be able to accidentally tab to a target that is out of combat with you, unless you are looking to a new target and your hostile enemies are behind you. Furthermore, you’re no longer able to tab to a target that neither your character nor your camera can see.
the 7.2 change doesn’t seem like it made its way into classic.
Funny how the tab targeting also seems to be camera oriented in Classic rather than Character oriented.
You can test this in Classic, have your character stationary and simply spin the camera and you will target enemies that are where the camera is facing, but your character’s orientation (head) has not turned.
